A Tesla driver was stranded in Red Rock Canyon near Las Vegas after the car's keyless control app suddenly stopped working.
Interested in testing a feature that lets Tesla owners unlock and power their car using their smartphone, Ryan Negri decided to leave his keys at home when he went for a drive around the canyon yesterday.
The keyless smartphone feature, which is available through Tesla's iPhone and Android apps, lets users remotely monitor and control their Tesla Model S without their key. One of the main features of the app is the ability to "unlock and drive Model S without your key".
Negri was able to do just this - but only to begin with. After getting out of the vehicle to adjust something when he was six miles from home he found himself locked out of the car unable to get back in let alone start it.

I read it even worse than that. Sounds like the wife was with him. He stayed with the vehicle and she ran the two miles to ge a signal.
.
Don’t expect much intellect from Tesla owners.
Crazy rolling coffin.
I don’t like the new tech with the way keys are set up now. Even my ‘05 Jeep has that type of key fob. Plain ‘ol key like we used to have would be nice, but that is not going to happen now.
tv_techie? My brother does camera for ESPN, ABC, Lucas Oil, etc.
You to? Happened to me. GD dog! I did manage to get back in that truck by wedging the door up top and using a stick to run the door lock button.
Engineer for a local O & O. Used to direct newscasts (and all the other tech positions along the way).
Engineers are the best! Not enough coming up in the ranks nowadays. I have worked in radio broadcasting for over 35 years. Now do my broadcasting over the air from home with a great computer setup. Love it!
Rofl. My exact same solution. It was a very hot day and we had the ac on high. That dog took a nap in the cool breeze while we sweated. Funny.
(My brother tried to get her to step on the unlock button. Didn’t work.)
“I could understand the fob not opening the doors remotely under these conditions, but when I put the key in and turn it, I expect it work. So, dont get pushed in the pool with your cell phone OR YOUR KEY FOB!”
There is a RFID chip in the FOB that talks to a sensor antennae located near or around the ignition switch that tells the PCM that the key is authentic or not.
No authentication and it kills fuel, starter or ignition.
Uh... Scouts?
Stupidity should have a price. Fortunately, the price for this guy was pretty low.
Design Error -
Apparently the App didn't have a “Stop for a Wizz” button...:^)
Yoar fag boi Timmah blew it again ...
Actually, I’m also a little surprised.
The cell phone is communicating with IEEE 802 protocols. Why didn’t the Tesla receive the transmission from the cell phone like the IOT? Is the Tesla not IEEE 802 compliant?
Good point. Back in the old days, Scouts would have worked perfectly.
The LAN was working as was the Bluetooth, but the system required connection to the Tesla SERVERS for the function to work and THAT required an Internet connection of which there was none.
Red Rock Casino is, too.
So many questions raised right here... he has signal at home, but not a mere 6 miles away? Teslas require external adjustments during trips? He was "stranded in the desert" when his home was a modest walk away?
Rule of thumb for desert driving. Never leave the vehicle without the window rolled down. 2nd rule, never turn off the vehicle. 3rd rule for off road, always drive forward, never back up. Always carry 5 gal of water and a method to communicate.
True. Greenie for sure.
