Driving from Amarillo to Austin, Texas (vanity)
14 Jan 2017 | vis a me

Driving this route soon. Have never been this way before. Little concerned because of the recent ice storms in Texas, New Mexico and Oklahoma. Any helpful hints? Best route? Any fun sights or good eats along the way?

That happened to me. We were all the way to Alabama before I came back to life.

See my #14. I drive west Texas roads a lot and know the speed limits. A couple of years ago the state raised them, and eliminated lower truck speeds and 65 mph nighttime limits.

Texas is a big place!

It has to be, because so many Texans are full of it. < / hateful New Mexican>

Thanks—this is the info I was looking for....didn’t really want to have to drive I 35 if I could avoid it. And I know there are plenty of great secondary roads in Texas. Have been on many of them just not in this area.

Take 281 north. Longhorn Cave is a fun half day stop. Marble Falls is a good place for lunch. Once you pass north of Marble Falls there is really nothing to see. so just take any of the roads north west to Amararillo. I guess if you have your heart set on seeing Lubbock and Abilene you can swing through those cities. Again there’s not much to see.

As for ice storms you’re just going to have to check the weather and road reports. They get some brutal winds blowing in that arctic air. I’m not worried about driving on ice but you get those white outs from the snow that can be dangerous.

Drive safe.

No kidding, I have driven I 10 many times from Orange to El Paso—880 glorious miles. I have been awake for most of them.

Stop at Storms Hamburgers in Hamilton, Lampasas or Burnet. Best hamburgers ever!

Lots of opportunities for LEO gotcha!

Ain't that the truth. I had NEVER had a speeding ticket until I lived in Texas. There was a speed trap they set up in an unmarked school zone near my apartment. The main street had a sign but none of the side streets were marked they were speed zones. Also... They changed the school zone time from 8am to 7:30 AM. They had a line of motorcycle cops pulling one driver after another. It was a $350 ticket non negotiable and no challenging. Another trip I was driving to Austin from Wichita Falls. I must have had LEO on my ass half the trip. Every minute or two I would get pinged with the radar while he was riding 15 20 feet from my bumper. Texan LEOs LOVE their power and have no problem executing it aggressively.

And if you go to West, just outside of Waco, don’t forget to stop by The Czech Stop for some kolaches.
