The future of gaming and entertainment is here. What used to be confined to flight simulators and military training exercises is now hitting the mainstream and has turned into a multi-billion dollar industry that is just getting started.
Virtual reality (VR) is here for the average consumer, and all the major tech companies are pouring money into this promising field of entertainment. Some have called 2017 the year of virtual reality as technology has finally caught up to the dreams of developers, and the cost to create VR devices has gone down, making it easier to purchase for the consumer.
But what is virtual reality and why is everyone talking about it? A brief history of virtual reality Numerous types of VR have been around since the 1930s, beginning with the famous View-Master that consisted of a plastic viewfinder accompanied with a circular cardboard disk that contained small color photographs of film advanced with a small lever on the side.
After the introduction and development of the computer during the 1950s through the 1980s, developers started to experiment with the technology to create more immersive types of devices.
Simulators became widely used in the 1980s and 1990s, and started to show up at arcades, proving to be a popular mode of entertainment for children and adults. However, at the time, the graphics were clearly pixelated and the experience was far from lifelike.
Then beginning at the turn of the new millennium, companies started to shift their focus to dabble more and more in VR. By 2013, Oculus Rift, a highly immersive VR headset, was invented and produced through a Kickstarter campaign that raised $2.5 million. This caught the attention of the tech world and Facebook quickly purchased Oculus Rift in 2014 for $2 billion.

Good. We need to put these liberal actors out of work.
Mmmmm nope. As long as it requires goggles it’s a toy and NOT an entertainment option. People still want to be able to be part of the world around them. Really all that’s changed since the last time they insisted VR was going to change the world is there’s more pixels. The core problem of the Holmes Stereoscopes remains.
Just today there was an article about the porn industry going into this.
Once they are able to implant the VR directly into your brain, the peeps will be conditioned enough to accept it. That is when this “Immersive Technology” gets truly dangerous, and ready for the anti-christ to use.
That’s a very good point. Many people still wish to share the viewing experience with their family and friends. Hard to do when everybody looks in different directions and from different heights. There will be uses for VR, but they may be in specialized situations. Lest we forget the Segway?
Segways are still around, but mostly confined to Mall Cops or Tour Groups. Nice, fun even, but not terribly essential, and certainly not ‘world changing’ as first advertised.
Basically it is a headset that holds your smartphone and shows two videos playing. There are a bunch on youtube. There are also game apps for it but I dont have a bluetooth controller for it yet. Was looking good.
Mmmm nope. I am flying inside a fully and accurately rendered cockpit of a light bomber aircraft that has not seen the skies in decades. Delivering my bombload requires skill and luck. It is the highest form of entertainment I could ever DREAM of.
VR is in its INFANCY and the tech will streamline to the point where we wont need scuba masks to do it.
SBS Videos. Side by side videos.

“Mmmmm nope. As long as it requires goggles its a toy and NOT an entertainment option.”
As long as it requires me to go to a theater and watch some black and white projected image on a screen its a toy and NOT an entertainment option.
As long as it requires that tele-vision box and rabbit ears its a toy and NOT an entertainment option.
As long as it requires a computer and this “internet” connection its a toy and NOT an entertainment option.
Funny thing is that entertainment options aren’t defined by people that dont understand it.
Those are the things I enjoy.
Not really up for playing VR games right now. I like the YouTube videos made for two eyes. It’s like a fun ride. I especially like the flight sims and the ones where you are floating in space.
Then why are we both sitting in front of our computers typing to each other instead of at a coffee shop or church or park talking face to face? You are right the the current level of VR is too cumbersome, but it is just a matter of time before technology solves that problem. Ultimately it will enable new forms of social interaction, like the internet enabled FreeRepublic.
I agree, but VR can enable it at times where reality can't. Have a kid off in another state? You can both put on VR headsets, and sit together on the coach and watch a movie together.
they had them on Red Dwarf...
Stereopticons appeared in the mid-1800s with Matthew Brady’s bringing photographs to everyone. Those 3-D views began with scenes from the Civil War, and expanded to views of far away places from all over the globe; Long before the Sawyer View Master.

Oh they're way ahead of you.
