Amsterdam Is Opening an All-Avocado Restauran

We hoped that perhaps the overwhelming avocado obsession, the food trend that creeps in at every corner and refuses to budge from our brunch menus, might die in 2016.

But clearly that’s not the case.

While avocado bars and cafes have been popping up around New York for a while, they haven’t really made it over to the UK – other than one entirely avocado brunch popup.

But the power of the avocado is creeping closer.

Amsterdam is getting a snazzy all-avocado café called The Avocado Show.

Created by foodie friends Julien Zaal, Ron Simpson, and Jaimie van Heije, The Avocado Show will be a restaurant serving up all things avocado, from avocado bun burgers (which are nonsense, but they look nice on Instagram) to avocado chocolate smoothies.

‘The possibilities are endless,’ the founders told Algemeen Dagblad. ‘Our only rule is that the dishes need to contain the green super fruit in one way or another.’

It’s not clear exactly when the restaurant will be open, but we do know it’ll be in early 2017, that it’ll be in The Pijp, and it’ll serve breakfast, lunch, dinner, and late night snacks.

If all goes well, brace yourselves for something similar in the UK. The avocado craze isn’t going anywhere just yet.

The blandest, most boring fruit to hit the new world. Why am I not surprised that the most boring country in the old world has taken it up.

I like avacados, but the latest research indicates too much copper.

Well, let’s hope other people do not become confused...because ‘avocado’....when pronounced sounds a whole lot like ‘abogado’ , which,in Spanish means ‘lawyer’

Now THAT would be a restaurant to avoid.

By itself, yes it's bland. But in a guacamole dip, not bland. I grew up eating them cut in half, with the seed hole filled up with Italian dressing. Also works well with French or Russian. I don't care if they get world-wide popular, but I hope they start growing them world-wide so they don't start getting stupid pricey.

One more reason for the libs to increase consumption: the Cu poisoning may make their skin less white.

At least they admit there’s a closed sign in their future. Silly to invest in such a one pony show.

I have never had an avocado and now that I know that they are “trendy” I will avoid them like the plague.

I really like guacamole, and a piece of ripe avocado with a dab of salt complements many dishes.

But it seems to me that avocados are on the same trajectory as pumpkins — on their way to becoming so ubiquitous as to inspire a “ho-hum” reaction.

I knew the pumpkin craze had gone too far when I sampled my first pumpkin beer — and that was at least 15 years ago.

The lesson here — there are trendy things that are actually good, and there are trendy things that are only trendy. But it’s never good for a good thing to become trendy.

I’m a convert to guacamole in the last 3-4 years, and I can handle a little avocado on a sandwich or in a salad. But an entire menu of it? No thanks.

Consumer Fun Fact: Avocados are cheapest for the Super Bowl and for Cinco De Mayo.

Last fall I went into a Bertucci’s with my daughter and saw a sign for a Pumpkin Cocktail. I scoffed, and said sarcastically,”What’s next, pumpkin
beer?”

She just laughed and told me that it had been around for years. I just shook my head and said that pumpkin beer was as bad as sun-dried tomato bagels.

The good thing about avocados is that they do not have an offensive flavor.

The bad thing about avocados is that they do not have much flavor at all. :)

Hmmmmm.

Let's take that one at a time.

First of all, if avocados hit the new world, it must have happened hundreds of thousands years ago. It is considered native to the Western hemisphere.

Second, avocadoes are a most versatile fruit.
When my daughter was in High School, her friends (girl's H.S.) were all grossed out when she first showed up with a sandwich of her own creation : Boiled egg/avocado sandwich.

By the end of the year, she had to bring several each time by request and could have sold a bunch if she had been so inclined.

Speaking for myself, a common quick snack meal, specially on weekends, used to be mixed rice/avocado with mayo or light dressing of choice.
