In order that we might all raise the level of discourse and expand our language abilities, here is the daily post of "Word for the Day".

ABIOSIS [ab ee OH sis, ay bye-]

noun Abiosis Is the absence of life; the related adjective abiotic describes any state or condition marked by absence of life.

The moon is said to be abiotic.

Abiosis is formed from the Greek prefix a- (the "alpha privative", indicating negation, as in apolitical, asymetrical, asexual) plus bio- (the Greek prefix meaning "life," as in biography, biology -- bios is the Greek word for life) plus -sis (the Greek suffix used to form nouns denoting state or condition, as in paralysis, perstalsis, stasis).

The condition of Pompeii and Herculaneum after the eruption of Mt. Vesuvius in A.D. 79 was one of complete destruction of life resulting in abiosis.

The Walking Dead, a condition brought on by the utter failure of Progressive politics has left its followers in a zombie-like state of abiosis.
