The very obvious flaw in their reasoning is that petroleum is not an unnatural substance in the ocean.
The beaches of So. Cal used to be black with petroleum before the drilling platforms moved in to relieve the pressure below.

Santa Barbara beaches have oil leaking out of the cliff face and tar balls and blacken sand on the beach itself.
This would be a major oil spill but as it is nature and no company to sue the whackos don’t complain.
