Will Megyn Kelly's Career be Doomed by the "McLean Stevenson Effect?"
Self | January 8, 2017 | PJ-Comix

Four years ago I posted about the "McLean Stevenson Effect" which you can read HERE.

Basically, McLean Stevenson starred on the hit series M*A*S*H. However, after 3 seasons in the role of Henry Blake, Stevenson got tired of being part of an ensemble and decided to leave the show and go it alone on the "McLean Stevenson Show" which was an immediate flop. His career never recovered and his name has become synonymous with really poor entertainment career decisions. You could even consider McLean Stevenson to be the patron saint of that type of poor judgement.

Okay, so my question is, will Megyn Kelly suffer from the curse of the "McLean Stevenson Effect?" To me the signs are all there. She has/had a built in audience at Fox News which she alienated by her attacks upon Donald Trump. However, if she thinks she will be attracting a new audience at NBC, she needs to be aware that the liberals still dislike her for merely being associated with Fox News. That is what I am reading on the web now. In addition, she appears to be spread very thin in her new role as morning host and a couple of other slots at NBC. Maybe she could even substitute for Brian Williams.

Her biggest flaw might be thinking it was all about her. What she doesn't get is that the Fox News audience (which she won't get at NBC) was essential for her previous ratings success.

All I know is her quick descent at NBC will be very painful. Megyn will spend the rest of her life wishing she never left her Fox News gig (along with regretting attacking Trump).

What McLean Stevenson's name means for TV entertainment, Megyn Kelly's name could become synonymous with poor TV news department decisions.

McClean Stevenson is Shelley Long’s drinking buddy.

She’s getting paid big bucks. I don’t see why she should care.

She became a pariah at Fox News. A filthy skank of enormous proportions.

All her colleagues despise her. It’s the main reason Greta left Fox, because she could not stand Kelly.

Bill O’Reily and Sean Hannity are very glad to see the $itch go.

Fox News will be MUCH MUCH better off without the butch haircut.

She won’t lose much moonbat audience because of her association with Fox News, IMO.

However, she’s not as good as she thinks she is, and she is going to have ratings trouble pretty quickly.

Good points.

I, for one, will definitely be tuning into MSNBC (never thought I’d be saying that!) to watch Greta rather than Brett Baier. It will be interesting to see how many Greta pulls in from Fox.

I can’t imagine Trump doing anything to boost Kelly’s ratings - I hope he’s done with that bimbo.

Maclean Stevenson had talent.

Maybe, but MASH got better after Colonel Blake went home and Colonel Potter took command.

Bryant Gumbel is actually doing pretty well on HBO Sports. He hosts a show on HBO. His ratings seem to do well for the genre. I still won’t watch him or that show.

Sad about McClane. He was our neighbor.

Yes, I think you are right. Unless she can fool whatever male audience she gets that she is sexy and smart again, she’s going to lose the Fox Team effect and her coworkers wont like her. Unless she still gives it out to some.

I was thinking more along the lines of Pernell Roberts:

To a Look magazine reporter, Roberts clarified what “state of resignation” meant: “I don’t read (the scripts) anymore. I just get on, ask somebody for the lines and say them. That’s all the attention this kind of operation deserves.” Asked if he was worried about looking bad as an actor, he scoffed, “You can get up there and put out one tenth of what you’re capable of and they all think it’s great. No, I won’t try hard.”...

...After a year away from Bonanza, he was forced to accept guest shots in The Virginian and The Girl From U.N.C.L.E. “because I have to make a living like anyone else. It’s the business that I’m in and I don’t have to appreciate the artistic level of what I’m doing.”

So it went for another 13 years.

Bonanza, meanwhile, did just fine without Adam Cartwright...The show reached number one in the ratings during Roberts’ final season, stayed there for two additional years, and remained in the top ten through 1971.”

I just remembered that Wayne Rogers left that show first, and then his acting career tanked. At least he got into investing and became successful there.

Another actor who left a popular show and disappeared was Pernell Roberts, who left Bonanza. He eventually returned as Trapper John, the character that Wayne Rogers left behind in MASH.
