Pits were bred to fight without emotion to the death. Clearly that trait expresses itself sometimes.
Pits aren’t being “mean” when their destroy instinct kicks in after a certain trigger. They’re just doing what they were bred to do.
You just shouldn’t have them unleashed near anything alive you don’t want dead
Look, I tried to talk my brother out of getting a pitbull because he has three children, and I admit that some breeds are more likely to be bread to vicious than others. I will also say that it comes down to the specific dog.

Yes, some breeds are bread to attack. No, just because a dog is of a certain breed doesn't mean the dog WILL be vicious.
I had a huge doberman I bought as a puppy that thought he was a lapdog and was awesome around my kids.

I wonder if there has ever been a study to find out what breeds end up in homes where they become well trained vs. those that wind up in homes where they aren’t well trained?

on the show that featured loggers- one of the families the brown family i believe it was- the wife was watching her child play in the yard with their family rottweiller, and watched helplessly as the dog mauled her to death-
The sick thing is that the dog had bitten another family member I believe- might have been a friend- can’t remember now- some time before that
If you go online there is a list of dog attacks by breed- the numbers are ugly- of course owners of the most dangerous dogs will always claim it’s the owner’s fault- not the breed-

I have another friend who lived with a roomate who occasionally brought by his 9 year old female pitbull. It barked ferociously at anyone that came in, but then settled down if you got to know it. But like I said in my earlier post, there is always a possibility of these pits to go rogue and attack unprovoked. It’s like it’s in their DNA. I don’t trust these dogs. On a couple occasions once it stayed at this house to live permanently I let my guard down as it seemed good tempered and I’d do the tug of war thing with the thick rope and it snapped and nicked my hand with it’s teeth. On another occasion probably after a few drinks the dog was being sweet (so I thought) and it was licking my face and neck and then started doing the light nipping thing on my neck when I realized I am mere seconds from becoming a fatality if the dog chose to “turn” on me so I wised up and ended that lovefest.

On another occasion at a job I was working in a rich snobby persons home and the couple were from Haiti and had this pitch black German Shepard named Gia and the dog wanted to kill me and the couple would talk to the dog like it was a cute princess saying "no Gia... good dog!" after it lunged or tried to bite me. It got to a point I had to have them put it in another room so I could work safely. Even still they'd let it out and it always came charging at me barking and baring it's teeth, while they would laugh and say, Gia.... Good dog, good dog! I gave up that job as it wasn't work my life due to these incompetent liberal morons that still thought they were living in Haiti. They were darker than most black people but the husband had vitaligo where parts of his skin were whiter than even an albino. One of the weirdest jobs I've ever done. I still remember being on ladders and the dog nipping at my feet while the idiot owners were saying "good Gia, good dog!"
Back Yard Breeders. The majority of pit- bull breeders,I believe. ‘Bad’, powerful bloodlines are big moneymakers.
My friends band did a video a few years back about the evils of the dog fighting industry.
Some BYB bother with paperwork, accurate or otherwise, re pedigrees. Most don’t. Subject A has a litter, advertises or tells friends, you go over-pay-and leave with a puppy. A year later you breed it and sell your own litter. You have NO way of knowing if sire or dam had fighting dogs in its line-and some people consider that more desirable! Friends of friends of friends just sell and buy puppies. No records, no regulations. Basically it’s ‘here’s a basket of pit bull puppies, a percentage of them will have hair-trigger kill instincts’-play roulette- or seek a more docile breed. I, personally,don’t believe there are more than 10% of pit bull’s alive today that do not have violent/fighting dogs in their bloodline. The number of dog fighting types breeding and selling is simply too great and every generation pollutes the breed more.

Besides basic care you have to have an imposing dominator male or a determined alpha female to lord over badass dogs where they just instinctively know who to direct fire at instead of the kids
But that doesn’t give kids license to tease a big male or a cantankerous female period and boys love to see dogs get stirred up which is not smart
I personally would damn sure rather get my leg latched by a pit than taken down by a raging 150 pound Rottie or a T-Rex 90 pound Dobie leaping five foot off the ground at my throat

I was post roping a wild stud pony a few years ago and he was pulling me around like 3 year old on a spinnaker line

I’ve owned several Pits....they will bite and I’m more cautious with them and loud kids
I had like Salamander here a Hoyt Dobie who was a monster but I never worried about the kids with him
He was all family servant besides trying to kill cats his only flaw

I’m a Rott Dobie guy no doubt but toughest dog I ever owned was a Southern ABD from Konfederate Kennels in South Georgia
Like 120 pound rangy pit
He bite everyone but me and Wifey so we got him adopted by a French bully breeder and he’s now a stud dog with a high volume

As a teen our family had two Shelties. They were viscous, when they got into it with each other. We had to pull them apart, and often got bit pretty severely.
I guess if people want to be afraid of dogs, they can. Better look beyond just Pit Bulls, however. During the 1970s Dobies held the same reputation, that Pits now hold.
Pits aren’t the only breed with the size, strength to inflict severe injuries, either.
What is NOT being discussed is the responsibility of owners to keep their dangerous animals secured and away from the public.
I was walking my normal route through a beach parking area, a few days ago. An owner had a dog loosely on a leash, and the animal struck at my leg. I pulled away but the animal tore my clothing.
That animal should NOT have been in public. Period. (I did nothing to bring cause the animal to charge and strike).
I am shocked to hear of vicious Shelties. The two males I had were unrelated-one a few years old when we got the second-and NEVER so much as growled at each other OR people. They were the most docile human-like dogs I have ever known. A friend was a breeder and showed Shelties. She had 13 in her house when I, a stranger, went to visit. It was fabulous! Beautiful, affectionate dogs everywhere! Never saw a bad moment. Any breed can produce a dog that deviates from the breed standard. My aunt had what had to be a bi-polar cocker spaniel. His eyes would look funny and you knew to stop petting him; then he was fine again. Those are anomalies. Pits were created to be powerful, aggressive dogs and, with the proliferation of thug breeders, I contend that docile, non-aggressive pit- bulls do exist but they are the anomaly now.
