In 2015, a 30 Year Old French Nuclear Submarine 'Sank' a U.S. Aircraft Carrier

In March 2015, one of the largest nuclear-powered warships in the world was “sunk” by one of the smallest. The Saphir, a French nuclear attack submarine, reportedly penetrated the defenses of the aircraft carrier USS Theodore Roosevelt and scored simulated torpedo hits on her. The incident, originally reported by the French Navy, was later suppressed.

Life after a successful submarine attack may not be long for the submarine but a great deal of damage can be done before the sub is destroyed. Today with small nuclear warheads on torpedoes the sub does not have to get even close, all he has to do is hear the carrier group in the distance and then put one torpedo in the middle of the group and get them all.

When the torpedo is heard in the water it is too late to do anything about it.

All that being said the Navy knows about this threat that is why with an aircraft carrier group there are always sonabouys being dropped all around the group within torpedo range. It is very difficult to avoid detection with active sonar, it is especially difficult to avoid detection within several hundred miles of the US coastline, especially the the east coast where we have permanent sonar detection blanketing hundreds perhaps thousands of square miles.

Operating on the sea is dangerous during wartime. Operating under the sea during wartime is especially dangerous. The men who operate submarines during wartime are special heroes, they know they will likely die doing their work to protect the country but they do it anyway.

I lived on a Polaris boat during peace time in the 60’s, while not the safest place in the world I never really considered it dangerous but if a war would have started I knew the end would come relatively soon. We were expendable as long as we took a lot of tonnage with us or a lot of cities with us.

The fact that a sub could get that close to a CVBG isn't a reflection on the surface Navy rather it is a reflection of our own submarine force failing its primary mission of sanitizing the area for the CVBG.

The attack sub fleet in wartime has to track and following and SINK every enemy attack sub for the surface Navy to be able to operate. THAT'S THEIR JOB. If our attack fleet can't do that then we're screwed. It is not their job to hot dog around in peacetime an play a fake hostile subs in a phony bologna exercise and claim some kind of superiority. IT IS ONE NAVY and every fleet asset has it's role.

Unless it is a nuke there is no missile that is going to sink a CVN.

As someone said, that would be a result of the parameters of the op.

“Ohh I have a game, lets throw this sub in here unannounced”
Watch the fun!

And yes only subs will stalk subs effectively IMHO.

Just an opinion

Our ASROC had nuclear capability in the very early 60’s. You think the Chinese won’t send their very best when they can take out a CVN with a nuke?

My favorite, seen near Pearl Subase on a t-shirt with the dolphins in the backgrownd:

Why do ships float?
We allow it.

In wartime out attack fleet has the inglorious but vital job of hanging out near enemy naval bases to try to pick up the enemy attack sub fleet. This is boring. dangerous and tedious work. So instead in peacetime they go around and participate in anti CVBG exercises with ridiculous starting conditions and rules of engagement. It make them feel good I guess. A real chest pumper.

The surface Navy and the Carrier Air wing know they need our attack subs doing their silent mission effectively so they can do theirs. They are under no illusion that without that ASW support the attack boat fleet provides then they are screwed. The surface Navy appreciates them but the feeling isn't mutual.

I cross decked on an attack sub for about 4 weeks to do a Naval exercise. It is amazing how little they know about the surface Navy and Naval aviation. They try to pretend they are a separate branch of the military. Their somewhat arrogant attitude sucks, frankly.

It is to bad because it is one Navy after all.

If naval vessels are firing nukes at each other then there are way bigger problems in the world than that. Our cities are probably burning craters.

I am very familiar with ASROC nuclear depth charges. It takes a Presidential order just to load one into the launcher.
