It started when Jasmin Floyd was on her way to kindergarten and complained of a stiff neck.
The family had just moved to Connecticut, but it turned out to be the beginning of the mother and daughter’s worst nightmare — it was when Floyd’s body began trapping her inside itself.
Floyd was diagnosed with FOP (Fibrodysplasia Ossificans Progressiva), which is known as the mannequin disease, according to CNN.
It is causing Floyd to grow a second skeleton, as her ligaments and muscle slowly turn to bone.
It’s a rare disease that affects 1 in two million people and it is slowly immobilizing Floyd.
There are only 700 confirmed cases in the whole world and flare-ups, growing unnecessary bone, happen spontaneously and usually after things like immunizations, falls, and viral illnesses.
Surgery to get bone removed can make the condition worse because more bone will continue to grow around the healing wound.
Floyd’s shoulders were the first to freeze up, and now the 23-year-old is doing everything she possibly can with the movement she has left, she even loves washing dishes.
Floyd told CNN she was told she would live until she was 45, and bone was now growing around her rib cage.
“Even though my lungs are healthy, the area around them is not,” she said.
She wrote on her blog, “One Spirit. Two Skeletons,” she had a sudden flare up of FOP in April and began to lose movement in her jaw.
“In just three months I went from having over one inch of jaw mobility to less than one centimeter,” she said.
“This progression affected many aspects of my life — primarily my diet, but also talking at length and being able to brush my teeth. I’m still working on adapting to the changes and figuring things out.”

Well, maybe a little - but she is much prettier, and more attractive than Chellzie...
I saw a special on this disease. Horrific. ANY injury is “healed” by creating more bone.
It’s not even like a cure could save these people once all of the extra bones mass is there and immobilizing and crushing you.
Pray for a miraculous healing. With GOD all things are possible.
I almost died about 10 years ago from head injury.
Still have some lousy symptoms but MANY disappeared WAY After the 2 year window doctors told me any healing was possible.
You’re right.
If anyone wants proof of a miracle, before the injury I typed 100 wpm.
At my worst, up to about 4 years after, I could type 16.
Now I can type 100 again.
What doctors dont know is a lot
I’m so sorry for this young lady. She is literally smiling through the pain. If having this disorder is her fate, she’s with the right sort of mother, who offers the girl support and encouragement to do whatever she still can physically do.
There is still a lot about genetic disease that is not known.
At very least, I hope a treatment is found for her most acute levels of discomfort. Found within the next few years.
From what I’ve discovered, the United States leads in genetic research, followed closely by Oxford and Cambridge in the U.K. and later China. China is not known to be the best at providing enough supporting data for it’s conclusions.
Brain starts forming new connections, stuff like that.
Prayers for the young lady.
Plasticity, right? What about the old injured or dead ones?
I guess they just stay there either malfunctioning or dead.
That’s the tough part about healing a brain even with stem cells.
The damaged cells causing pain and insomnia and night terrors and near seizure-like spasms will still be there, won’t they?

The brain still remains the most mysterious organ, doctors have barely begun to comprehend what it can do.
As for me, I’m the same as usual.

A friend of mine from North Haven, Ct has a daughter with FOP. She’s now 37 and a really inspirational person.
And I am grateful for them :)

Good Lord, this sounds like a disease from science fiction. I could not imagine anything more dreadful than this. She seems to be so strong and of good cheer based on the interview...bless her.

lol. I wish i was still a Guido! I was 20, in great shape and dated a gorgeous girl every other week.
Now I’m fat, middle aged and married.
When I die, and hopefully go to Heaven, I’m gonna have a word with God about this whole aging thing!
