The basics of Scientology read like a science fiction story because back in the day L. Ron Hubbard was a fairly well-known science fiction writer.

The story goes, possibly apocryphal, that Hubbard, Robert Heinlein, Issac Asimov, and several others were sitting around one day commiserating about how poorly paid they were and how to get more money for their stories.

Hubbard is supposed to have remarked that the real way to make money would be to start your own religion.

Soon he came out with “Dianetics” which got the ball rolling, leading to Scientology.

Excellent!

Not everybody has A&E but You Tube is pretty universal these days.

Interesting about the exemption, and I wonder what the motivation behind that was? Knowing Clinton.........

I’ve heard a bunch of folks were supposedly at this jaw fest of sci-fi guys. The story I always heard was that someone else recommended starting a religion to make real bread easy and Hubbard followed the advice. The stories vary and many authors are attributed in my experience. Possibly Jack Vance— read ‘the brains of Earth’/Nopalgarth from Vance.

In any case Amazing Stories magazine actually had the first dianetics stuff, eventually the editor Campbell realized it was garbage and quit printing the articles and ads and contact info if I recall.

Very interesting series. I live about 6 miles from the Clearwater Scientology headquarters. The cult has had an enormously negative impact on the city.

They show the hospital you were born in. It’s now known as the Big Blue Suck.

Seems like celebs use Scientology to move up the ladder and then part ways after they’ve profited from their cult activity.

Good for her speaking out though. Honestly she sounds a bit... medicated. Hope she’s not abusing anything.

“PS: Creepiest of all? Hubbard himself.”

Wouldn’t you think a guy bilking all that cash out of gullible people could afford better teeth? Is he British?

[[I was just surprised that intelligent
people can believe such outlandish tales.]]

cults couch their scam in terms like ‘Helping the world’ ‘improving relationships’ etc- They are very smart at deceiving people into thinking that what they are doing is ‘good for humanity’- Rich celebrities like the idea of ‘helping others’ and of being a part of some kind of inner circle- makes em feel even more important i guess-

[[I could really do without the “F” bombs]]

Agreed- but these people are really really pissed and embarrassed that they got duped as badly as they did- I can understand how they must feel really dumb for having fallen for this crap- and for being used and abused like they were-

I do wish though they coudl express their anger without hte f bombs-

As I told a previous poster that “word” seems to be the new word for too many people to use and that’s really sad. It diminishes those who use it, imho.
