Hi Jim, I didn't know how to email you privately so I'll use one of the more casual forums. This is not a new topic, I'm sure, but let me add my voice to whatever clamor there is to migrate Free Republic to a more modern forum software package, one that

1. Has functions which are easy to see/find and invoke

2. Allows easier upload of pictures

3. That allows email notification of replies to comments

4. That allows editing after a comment is posted

5. That has text editing features so one doesn't need to know HTML code in order to add emphasis.

6. That has a Search function for previous posts

7. That is easier to navigate to the specialty forums such as "Gods, Graves, Glyphs", which, had it not been mentioned in a random post, I never would have found here on FR.

This is the modern era, there are far, far better forum software packages out there. Free Republic may well experience a rapid growth in users post Trump victory. We'll want to make joining and participating fully in FR as easy as possible.

Is it possible to have a function in the *To:* box that would *spellcheck* a name you type in?

E.g. I type Inge-Cay. Hit preview.
I get a message *Could not find anybody named ‘Inge-Cay’ *

It would be so nice, if I could get a *hint* for example:
*Did you mean, *Inge_Cav*?

Whachuthink?

It would save so much aggravation/stress to skirt around the chore that you have to go back and see if you typed the right spelling, etc. It’s great if you forget to capitalize, it goes through okay.

Is it Joe Six-Pack, Joesixpack, Joe 6-Pack, Joe6pack ...or any other permutation? {{{sigh}}}

For years, I’ve axed if we could please have a sixty second delay, where we would go back and edit a post; I *know* what the answer is. {{{sigh2}}}

I think most people would use that function to correct typos, grammar, and the like. If you have a disability like a TBI, vision...it would be so nice to have that option.

This thread is like a wish list to Santa. Thanks Yollo.

Merry Christmas to all my darling FReepers.

Use preview to edit leisurely.

To add my 2 cents

I do CMS Web building and having a quick 'Like' and a mobile app skin to make it easier to lurk and post, would be nice

The bottom actions links cannot be seen on my Note 5 without tagging and expanding it.

Huh. Apple seems to use voodoo for this feature. I don’t know what I can do to enable it, Apple uses heuristic algorithms to mark off content. Maybe they have since added markup magic, the 2010 article I read left me with little hope.

That's not necessary. However a very simple meta viewport tag in the head of the template would do wonders for us that view FR on a phone. The following code in the tag wouldn't even require a major QA effort for release:

So you can't access FR while yer driving down the road, or stealing time from your employer at work???

See there?, FR's formatting is not only keeping you safer but honest as well...

LOL. I just don’t wanna hunt my glasses every time I wanna get up to date on FR. That tag allows for text size to render according to device size without pinch zooming which leads to left and right scroll - blech.

How is posting on a phone difficult (or rather, what could we do better?) Only problem I have is HTML posting due to having no angle brackets on this blasted thing.

It's hard to take anyone's opinion about anything seriously if they lack the ability to know the difference between its and it's; your and you're; must of and must have...

I'm sure they know the difference when they're saying it...And I know the difference when I'm reading it...Do you, or do those sentences confuse you???

Reader View works for this posting:

FR Link for Reader View: Progressives without Power

Is there a hint somewhere in that posting? I wish I knew how to do this stuff but I don't.

As you can see from the replies to your post, the average age of Freepers must be over 80. You have some good suggestions. But this crowd hates good suggestions.

I’m sure the current format must turn off many potential contributors to FR — that’s not good. It makes us look like neanderthals.

A LIKE button would be a big improvement. It would cut down on having to read through many useless posts to get a sense of how the community feels about a post.

Yup! But it follows such an occurrence seamlessly.

If there is any interest, Jim can ping me.
(Including turning it all over to Jim as FR branded for sale apps, for some reasonable consideration to the app authors.)

Just my opinion :-)

And to the post's parent....you can't do HTML....but you are proposing something better...??...

You ought to be proficient in the current form here....

No. We like it this way. Why? Because it takes an effort to learn the ropes.

I strongly agree. It is a private organization in which motivated people put forth the effort to learn how to stick around.

I love the clean, simple and classic format.
