Apple is releasing the macOS 10.12.2 software update for Mac today. The new version includes Unicode 9 emoji like iOS 10.2 plus four new wallpapers and plenty of bug fix improvements. macOS 10.12.2 is available as an update from the Mac App Store including for developers and public beta testers. Release notes below:
Unicode 9.0 emoji support matches compatibility with both iOS 10.2 and watchOS 3.1.1. These are the changes discovered during the beta period:
macOS 10.12.2 follows the major release of macOS Sierra in September. Sierra includes new features like Siri on the Mac for the first time, Apple Pay on the web, picture-in-picture video playback, and much more.
Apple also believes this update fixes graphics issues experienced on new MacBook Pros. Separately, Apple is removing the time remaining indicator from the battery status menu bar item.

I’ve suddenly started getting pop-up tabs filled with spam on my MB Pro. The most common tells me I have to click on a link in the tab to update Adobe Flashplayer (which is up to date). Others are ads for gold or for investing in marijuana. A really annoying one is a video of some guy who says he was with the CIA and is predicting economic doom. This whole thing just started a few weeks ago. Has anyone else experienced this? I regularly run Anti-virus Bitsweeper but it keeps coming back.

Frankly, I think your problem is "Bitsweeper." No one running a Mac should need to run a third-party anti-virus app. Most of the non-standard ones such as bit-sweeper ARE malware and adware installers themselves!
Apple's operating system will self-identify ALL of the current Trojans and variants in the wild, as well as any new ones based on the family structures of those Trojans, and warn the user on download, installation, and first-run of any such malware! The system REQUIRES the user attempting to bypass these warnings to provide an Administrator's name and password to proceed with each step in downloading, installing, and first running such a malicious application, so it requires an industrial strength stupid user to get one on a Mac.
These third-party anti-virus applications such as Anti-virus Bitsweeper actually DEACTIVATE that built-in OS LEVEL protection system so they can allow their less effective after-the-fact system scans to find something, if the don't install it them selves!
Bitsweeper is an adware organization that came out of a failed online gambling company. Get it off your Mac immediately!
Then restart your Safari Browser while holding the Shift key down to open a clean, no tabs Browser, then clear your cookies and history, and remove any plug-ins you did not add yourself. Reset your preferred search engine to Google, Bing, or preferably to "Duck, Duck, Go." Then reset your home page to your choice, not what the hijacker set for you. . . Either your preferred search engine, FreeRepublic, Drudge, or your Service Provider, all are good choices.
You DO NOT NEED ANY ANTI-VIRUS APPS FOR YOUR MAC, EXCEPT WHAT COMES WITH IT FROM APPLE!
That being said, some of what you describe, especially the video, are merely difficult to get rid of ads. Get Ad-block. It's a free app/Browser plug-in and run it. A lot of this will go away. Some sites will not allow you to visit them with an ad blocker running, but Ad-Blocker allows you to pause it for single visits, or to "white-list" specific websites where Ad-Block will automatically allow ads to be displayed when you visit for sites you frequent often.
For those really persistent ads, the shareware or ransom ads that hijack you Browser and won't let go, either force quit the browser (using the option under the Black Apple on the Top Menu Bar) or force quit the entire computer by holding down the power button for ten seconds to fifteen seconds until the computer powers down. Restart.
When you restart the Safari browser, hold down the shift key to open the browser with no tabs, only the favorites screen. Then follow the instructions above.

I knew you would advise jalisco555 to delete that stupid app. I finally got my sister to remove one of those stupid anti virus sites on her Mac and that is precisely because of your great advice.

I can’t install the watch update it keeps telling me I do not have an internet connection. I rebooted my wifi, turned my phone on and off and unloaded and reloaded the app. With no luck.
Thank you for your response. My problem preceded my adding Bitsweeper. Nevertheless I took your advice and got it off my computer and added Adblock. We’ll see how it works.

I have a macbook pro late 2013 with El Capitan with 16GB RAM. I’ve been delaying updating to Sierra. Anyone have an opinion if it is OK to upgrade to Sierra now at this Sierra update?
Personally, I have had zero issues with macOS 10.12 Sierra and it is now on the second update. My office, which has to wait for an OK from our software vendors to do their due diligence, has just last week received a tentative OK to update as well from our main vertical solution vendor. We are just waiting for the company that makes our 3D radiology equipment to sign-off on it as well.
I think you would be OK to update.

Conservatism_is_Compasion had a good point about me missing your comment about Adobe FLASH player. FLASH is THE #1 access point for malware on ALL computers and devices. That's why there are SOOOOOOO many updates to patch vulnerabilities in Flash.
My repeated, and repeated, and repeated advice on Adobe Flash is the following, and has been for years:
With Adobe Flash's record, the malware comes in and it takes Adobe a week to push out a new, repaired/patched version, but in the meantime, every computer/device with Flash installed is vulnerable until they do get it out. I suspect that is the vector that brought in your malware/adware.
