Washington, D.C. U.S. Senator Marco Rubio (R-FL), the Ranking Member of the Senates Subcommittee on East Asian and Pacific Affairs, today called on the Obama Administration to recommit itself to the Six Assurances as the centerpiece of U.S. foreign policy with respect to Taiwan.
During a subcommittee hearing on Taiwan this morning, Daniel Russel, Assistant Secretary for East Asian and Pacific Affairs, refused to confirm that the Six Assurances remain the guiding principles of U.S. policy toward Taiwan, as they have been since the early 1980s.
I am troubled that Assistant Secretary Russel was not willing to clearly reaffirm President Reagans Six Assurances regarding U.S. commitments to Taiwan, said Rubio. For decades, every administration, Democrat and Republican, including this one, has reaffirmed these commitments. I am concerned that todays failure to once again make our commitment to Taiwans security clear sends a dangerous message to China.

Note that this is from April, 2014. I think it helps to illustrate the trouble we’re having right now reconciling the 6 assurances policies with the one china policy. We have never recognized Chinese sovereignty over Taiwan and that was never questioned...not until Obama came to town.
Between today and inauguration day we have entered a most dangerous time. Now is the time that bad actors might exert military force on our friends and may not fear retaliation.
for sure.
China almost always tests our new President’s. They brought down one of our planes and took it apart during the first few months under Bush. I expect them to try something under Trump.
“China almost always tests our new President”
Bad plan to mess with a honey badger!
It is clear that 0bama wants communism to win.
Trump is pretty unpredictavle and I’m pretty sure that’s his intent. I’m pretty sure that lots of people will be trying to figure him out. I think the we can safely predict that the days of “no drama Obama” are over. Trump loves drama.
And Bush’s initial response was right. But we backed down after Colin Powell got is to apologize.
