Beautifully written.

I tell my RCIA class that where the West has one paragraph of philosophicslly-exact dogma, the Eastern Church(es) often have 15 minutes of chanting, bowing, and poetry.

We need each other. We really do.

How great you’re teaching RCIA classes! This is new information for me about the Eastern church as both a Catholic and an artist (musician, song writer, writer, and film maker) can you orient me to anything regarding the Eastern Church and what you spoke of? Also since you teach RCIA. Are there any foundational resources for beginning Catholics you can recommend?

Wise choice. A good confessional Lutheran synod would have worked for him too...

There are so many.... Hard to say where to start. One good one is https://www.amazon.com/Catholic-Christianity-Complete-Catechism-Beliefs/dp/0898707986

This is the one by Peter Kreeft. He writes clearly and plainly and still beautifully --- fine qualities for a professional philosopher. He also has a wonderful little book called something like "Beginning to Pray".

Almost all the material I have on Eastern Christianity are Orthodox (not Eastern Catholic) ---- and for the most part, Orthodox and Eastern Catholics share the same kind of spirituality. Liturgically they are practically identical. I'd ask FReeper NYer, who They could point out some of the best Eastern liturgical chanting on YouTube.

'Course you could plunge right into the deep end, like reading the Philokalia. Can you swim? :o) When you find good stuff, esp. for beginners, let me know!!

No Lutheran synod has actual priests so, no, it would not have worked for him.

I beg to differ... we are all priests... if priests matter at all. Who invented priests? certainly not Jesus. But... this is a Catholic thread and brothers in Christ are brothers in Christ. Merry Christmas! Please pardon my intrusion.

“I beg to differ... we are all priests... if priests matter at all.”

We share in the common priesthood of all baptized believers (1 Peter 2:9). But, just as Israel was a priestly nation (Exodus 19:6), yet still had a select priesthood set aside for service to the Lord (Deuteronomy 18:1) just as we have an ordained priesthood today: http://jimmyakin.com/library/the-office-of-new-testament-priest

As the Catechism of the Catholic Church puts it:

784 On entering the People of God through faith and Baptism, one receives a share in this people’s unique, priestly vocation: “Christ the Lord, high priest taken from among men, has made this new people ‘a kingdom of priests to God, his Father.’ The baptized, by regeneration and the anointing of the Holy Spirit, are consecrated to be a spiritual house and a holy priesthood.”

“Who invented priests? certainly not Jesus.”

God invented the priesthood and so Jesus had a hand in its creation (Colossians 1:16; John 1:3). And Jesus instituted the New Testament priesthood for He chose the Twelve Apostles and gave them power and authority (John 20:19-23).

“But... this is a Catholic thread and brothers in Christ are brothers in Christ. Merry Christmas! Please pardon my intrusion.”

No pardon needed. Merry Christmas!
