American football could fall like the gladiators of ancient Rome

When I called my father back home in Oregon on a recent Sunday, he rattled off his thoughts about the election, the health of his two dogs and queries about holiday plans. But, as the child of a sports-loving house (Go, Ducks!), I was most surprised by what my dad wasn’t talking about on Sunday — football.

He’s not alone in his waning interest. This season, ratings for professional football are down 27 percent across all of the major networks: ESPN, Fox, NBC and CBS, according Forbes. The decline in the ratings underscores a bigger truth that no one wants to face: Nothing lasts forever. And that includes the popularity of professional football, which now may be experiencing the slow, inevitable crumble of a Roman-style empire.

I detest every rule change made since Don Meredith smoked marlboros on the sideline when defense was in

The players besides thuggery garbage are crybabies who won’t play hurt

Quarterbacks and receivers are treated like snowflakes

Jane Skinner is wasted on that spineless Roger Goodell

Average IQ today is prolly 75-80 yet they quote went to college

Unless Vandy it doesn’t count for much....does the NFL have a Vandy grad....they have to do class there and grades

I could go on and on

My dad was a top 25 national college player and drafted by Giants

And I grew up around players including the aforementioned Dandy Don

I played 7 year of my own life from 4-10th grade

My middle boy is the best defensive back in our county for high school frosh

My wife is a crazed...like Squeaky Fromme level Crimson Tide and Death Valley tigers fan

She’s still crying over Mike

She’s LSU first and Tuscaloosa second

I try to explain how the pros are so watered down

Gotta protect those quarterbacks who can’t marshall from the pocket but love to run

It’s like the NBA has dry humped the NFL and created a new class of kilngons

And I like some of them but it’s like real life....the bad ones outnumber the good

"After yet another year of watching the Gators’ anemic offense, I’m all for doing away with football."

So, if your team goes bust, the rest of the league can take a flying leap off the cliff? That is ironic. It reminds me of the sore loser Hillary voters who need a cup of chocolate and some silly putty in a quiet room.

As for me, I got mine: Go Seahawks!

As a life-long Detroit Lions fan, I have increased efficiency in reading the post-game sports section and saving myself hours of grief.

Reading only the post-game analysis and looking at the bottom-line score the next day saves a lot of time...and reinforces my decision to miss all the NFL shitheads taking-a-knee TV drama.

“Nobody cares about soccer. Its a boring communist European sport, and its boring.”

Plus, you can watch paint dry for free.

I like soccer. It is a fast and clever game. The players are marvelous fast running, jumping and very accurate when placing goal balls. No room for people to just throw muscle around creating concussions though I have to admit there are problems with soccer concussions but nothing like football. Also the soccer players are physically beautiful. It is rather like watching gazelles of soccer run vs rhinos of football, you know.

Used to be football was clever...actual strategies. But now having watched it for 50 years it is truly boring.

This house will always watch flag burners.

Nothing worse for a child to grow up under tyrant rules, when life is so much more rich.

I used to be as big a fan of the NFL as you could find anywhere.

To show you how far it has fallen in my eyes, I'm posted a message on this thread and I don't even care enough to list all the reasons why I lost interest in it.

Finally the couch potato American is catching on.

They are through with wasting their weekends watching a bunch of overpaid junkies and overpriced commercials line the pockets of these alphabet networks and owners.

Personally, I gave up on PROstitute football 10-15 years ago when all the monkey dancing started. Made me sick to watch a person dishonor themselves after accomplishing something so small as if they were the only ones that made it happen.

Still love a good High School game though and attend them under the Friday Night Lights.

Give me Cowboys and Steelers from the 70s. That was football worth watching.

Amen to that Brother. Where men were men and sheep were scared

The ####ing budweiser commercials with gay marriage and transgender pushing.

Where's everyone been?

They have been signaling this for years: "This Bud(aka butt)'s for you."

I’ve seen a lot of sloppy playing this season. Too many penalties, which I’d chalk up to lack of discipline.

Football never has and never will interest me. Frankly, I don’t see how guys can constantly watch ESPN and Sports Center and listen to sports talk radio. It would drive me mad.
