TX Congressman still fuming over balcony barbecue scolding (trunc)
Dallas News ^

"About seven years ago, the architect of the Capitol, who works for the House and Senate, had decided that we all work for him and started making demands," Gohmert said. "One of which was, I could not cook ribs and share them with other members of Congress."

For Gohmert, smoking ribs on the office balcony was a quarterly tradition until the architect of the Capitol raked him over the coals, calling the practice a potential fire hazard.

(Snip)

"It's probably the only time here on Capitol Hill when I actually leave a good taste in people's mouths instead of a bitter taste," he said.

I feel for Gohmert here. Whenever I decide to fire up the old grill at my workplace, I get yelled at.

Presuming that he used an electric smoker, it's hardly a fire hazard. It's all contained, and there's very little combustion.

Some vegetarian/vegan probably complained because the aroma reminded them of what they were missing. :-)

As long as a drunken, drugged up Patrick Kennedy isn’t roasting wombats, it’s ok.

Our city ordinance is no (flame) BBQ’s within 10’ of an apartment wall. Electric should not be a problem.

I have fought quite a few fires caused by flame ups igniting the soffit.

Come on, Clay Moore! Beer and B-B-Q with plenty of starter fluid . . . on a balcony . . . what could go wrong with that! “Here, I’ll light that. Hold ma beer.”

Call me a party pooper or whatever, but somehow to me it doesn't seem to be quite fitting to be holding beer n' barbecue parties on the balcony of the historical U.S. Capitol building.

In other words, I fully understand the architect's angst.

Hey, I have one. It works great, and I can choose the wood chips I want. I really like mesquite.

Although I typically smoke a brisket.

Cool. I’m into it pretty heavily (although not recently).

Purists lean to wood/charcoal for fuel as part of the art.

I have a friend with a high-tech pellet smoker. It’s awesome. He can do heat and smoke profiles and monitor/control it on his phone.

I have a weber bullet with a home-made controller so I don’t have to check it every 1/2 hour (I did a ton of smokes like that to learn).

It’s all good stuff!

Since when is some architect the boss of the congressmen? This guy allows some outside contractor to boss him around like that? This guy is a wuss

Grill baby, grill

screw the haters, they are just jealous, heck invite the architect to the next one and show him your new fire extinguisher you bought, you know, just in case. That is what I would have done.

Well, heck, Congressman. Invite the folks over to the house for ribs. In your office, fry ‘em up a turkey. Be CERTAIN you invite the Capitol architect.

If he invited the architect for ribs this probably wouldn’t have happened in the first place.

This guy’s a politician...?

Leni, if walls could talk, there’d be stories of a far more insidious nature than a good ol Texas barbeque.
