Dolly Parton has announced plans to donate $1,000 per month to every family who lost their home in the wildfires sweeping through the Smoky Mountains of Tennessee. The country music icon is helping the homeless families in need with the monthly donation for six months, until they get back on their feet.

Parton will make the donations through her Dollywood Foundation, reports the Knoxville News Sentinel, noting that the foundation plans to make more information available on Friday. According to the newspaper, more than 150 homes and businesses in Gatlinburg, Tennessee, have been destroyed.

We Tennesseans have long known her to be goodhearted, genuine, and brilliant.

Her tinkling laugh is one of my favorite things about her.

I whole heartedly agree, I just wish she wouldn’t have announced a couple weeks before the election that she was voting for Hillary.

Very nice, she has always been the real deal (well, with two notable exceptions). She would do the world a favor if she could just get Miley under control.

Dolly’s a smart businesswoman. She’ll be able to sort out the fraudsters.

Me, too! - Dolly has never gotten too big for her britches!
She has provided jobs for her very large extended family at
her park & other attractions. She once wrote that she likes
to go up to her park & stay at her family’s old cabin for
days by herself when she wants complete privacy to write her
songs. (It would have to be during the times when the park
closes as there are too many visitors to the park during
the “on” season.

I don’t care for Dolly, but I must say that that is a wonderful thing for her to do.

I doubt that. Dolly has enough sense to keep her mouth shut
about who she is voting for as she is well aware that at
least half of her fan base is Republican. - Wherever your
source, I doubt it.

I love Dolly! I saw her PSA about this and again I was reminded of not only her phenomenal talent but her sweet, southern charm.

Although different, she reminds me of Judy Garland in many respects.

And I've been to Dollywood!

Songwriting

Parton is a prolific songwriter, having begun by writing country-music songs with strong elements of folk music, based upon her upbringing in humble mountain surroundings, and reflecting her family’s Christian background. Her songs “Coat of Many Colors”, “I Will Always Love You”, and “Jolene”, among others, have become classics in the field. On November 4, 2003, Parton was honored as a BMI Icon at the 2003 BMI Country Awards.

Parton has earned over 35 BMI Pop and Country Awards throughout her songwriting career. In 2001, she was inducted into the Songwriters Hall of Fame. In a 2009 interview with CNN’s Larry King, Parton indicated she had written “at least 3,000” songs, having written seriously since the age of seven. Parton went on to say that she writes something every day, be it a song or an idea.

I saw that story too. But I heard she later came out and said she had never said that. Not sure which is true though.

“Providing funds for education and improving the quality of life of her hometown were at the forefront of the Dollywood Foundation when it was founded in 1988.

Among its first big projects was the “Buddy Program,” which was aimed at trying to help improve the high school dropout rate by encouraging seventh- and eighth-graders to partner up and look out for each other. On her end, Parton would give everyone a $500 check at graduation.”
