December 18. Very great big party at William B Astor’s Monday night, and another last night at John C. Hamilton’s. Both were favorable specimens of their bad class, particularly the former.

John Church Hamilton’s mother had died just a couple of years earlier, and his biography of Alexander Hamilton was being published. He seems to have been a dilettante, although very busy with his family.
