'Magic mushroom' psychedelic may ease anxiety, depression

The psychedelic drug in “magic mushrooms” can quickly and effectively help treat anxiety and depression in cancer patients, an effect that may last for months, two small studies show.

It worked for Dinah Bazer, who endured a terrifying hallucination that rid her of the fear that her ovarian cancer would return. And for Estalyn Walcoff, who says the drug experience led her to begin a comforting spiritual journey.

The work released Thursday is preliminary and experts say more definitive research must be done on the effects of the substance, called psilocybin.

But the record so far shows “very impressive results,” said Dr. Craig Blinderman, who directs the adult palliative care service at the Columbia University Medical Center/New York-Presbyterian Hospital. He didn’t participate in the work. …

Reading about doing something is not the same as actually doing it. I was content just to read about it back in my college days. I read many novels by Carlos Casteneda.
As far as actual mushroom use, I hear it be ‘entertaining even enlightening’ and it can also be quite dangerous.

Just two, maybe three years back, I read about a Karate Expert who visited a friend, ingested mushrooms and had a lot of alcohol to drink. He came to in jail, and was told he had disemboweled his friend. He didn’t recall it happening. He also didn’t recall confessing to the crime.
I could never enjoy taking something so dangerous that it would fully destroy two lives with one evening.

When I finish my time machine, I’m totally taking this article back to prove to 20-year-old me’s friends that it is too possible to have a bad trip on mushrooms.

Lots of hate for shrooms in this post. To each their own, I guess. Speaking for myself, I find them highly effective at sub-perceptual micro-doses from time to time. I take them for focus, energy, and creativity. Not saying they are for everyone, but I like them. I am a sales analyst and they suit my job quite well.

I am almost 50 and did plenty of shrooms and acid recreationally 20 to 30 years ago. Not up for that kind of party madness these days, but I don't regret any of it.

“I have known to many people that used this recreationally...One is dead and the other is a walking vegetable.”

You have friends that are Democrats?

when used by American Indians in ceremonies, the mushroom is taken in a group prayer service, and only one or two people take it. The mild “high” is only part of the ceremony and like other ceremonies, (i.e. Navajo Sings to help veterans adjust after going to war that does not use drugs) the ceremony and prayers and the loving care of those with you during the ceremony are more important than the mushroom itself.

So these “doctors” give it to two patients, with no ceremony, no supportive friends praying for them, and with an unknown dosages, and say it works?

call me skeptical.

I don’t use drugs—but not because of my great virtue but because I can barely handle this crazy world—I am just not ready to deal with a crazier one. :-)

I honestly don’t care what anyone else does—as long as they are not behind the wheel of a plane, boat, train, or car while they are doing it.

Dave’s not here, man.

I’m Dave, I got the stuff, let me in.

Thanks, I memorized that album in high school: Cheech & Chong - “Big Bambu” and it’s still funny.

Cheech drops by Chong’s pad and asks what he’s watching.
Chong replies, “I don’t know, it’s a movie about Indians, but it’s really boring.”
Cheech says, “Hey man, that’s not a movie, man. That’s a test pattern, man!”
Chong answers, “Far out.” A test tone is audible in the background.

I never heard it claimed that LSD cured depression, just that it “cured” alcoholism. A new kind of kick may just do that.

When it was first being tested clinically in the sixties it was thought that it’s use under controlled settings would be part of a cure fore depression

There have been many chemicals tried and many have failed.

As to anxiety and panic the best results come from cognitive behavior therapy

What you are seeing is the effects of DUMBO’s new DEA laws restricting Pain Meds even for Cancer patients. There are 1.33 Million known chronic pain patients. Even 80 yr old’s now must go through Pain Management and pee in a bottle like a street junkie once a month as that is all pain med is written for now. And it has to say CHRONIC PAIN on the script. 1 visit with these idiots who know noting about the incurable disease is $300 a month that is with a good ins and co-pay, times 12. They invade your privacy with mental health questions or do you own a gun. More a shrink than anything. Not qualified to teat specific diseases which should be left to the specialist treating the patient. Just another doc, another layer of money sucked out of your wallet by DUMBO.

Even my seizure drug is on the list, 30 day fill with 2 refills, then back to the doc for a new script. It is a drug I’ll have to take the rest of my life. I don’t need to see the doc but once every 6 months. But now am forced to every 3 months. Running up the Cost of Medicare/Tricare Life needlessly.

As long as the several States are allowed to decide. Our curse has become a tyrannical Supreme Court that shoves innovations down the States’ throats ala Roe and Obergefell. I would move to an anti-drug state, but five evil black robes would make me accept a society that I don’t agree with. Evil times.
