"A situation we should all do a mental rehearsal of our response so we don’t have to figure it out at the time."

EXCELLENT point!

It really is time for people to take an interest in situational awareness.

Somewhere in my feeble 16 year free republic memory about south bashing or race baiting is hinting you were on the wrong side pointing fingers and scolding

Am I wrong?

Funny

If I am wrong I apologize

I was married to a Brazilian and I still defend Dixie and what I think of the alt right

Am I absolved therefore?

Where were you raised?

Reminds me of Trevor Noah’s bit about learning German. I dislike his politics, but he can be a funny comedian.

Maybe, maybe not. I think it has a lot to do with attitude. I lived in Paris for three years alone. On a couple of occasions I was protected from aggression by persons I had “helped” in the past. Not ALL panhandlers are bums. Some have really fallen on hard times. They need an open ear and a helping hand.

"...Spokane has only got about a 2-3% black population don’t you?....we probably have more Russians than blacks...."

When you are in what could be a life threatening situation demographics don't matter.

If you have a license does that apply?

Ha! That’s great. Reminds me of an incident a few years ago when I was in the French Quarter in New Orleans, standing on a street corner waiting for my wife and some of our family to come out of some shop or other...big black man comes up and starts ‘asking’ me for money. I looked at him quizzically and said ‘Je n’parle pas la Americain, j’ai Francais’. Then it was HIS turn to look quizzical!

They need an open ear and a helping hand.

True. And I WILL help for those that are contrite and need it. For those that WANT it, nothing.

BTW...we just had another murder this AM. SSDD in LR,AR. Right next to national park historic Central High School.

LR Homicide at 13th & Woodrow

“Just gotta wear the purse crossbody and have an easy access pocket ready.”

I have mixed thoughts about that and have contemplated it quite a bit out of concern for the love of my life. Fanny packs designed for concealed carry fall into this same category. There’s no disputing that fanny packs, so called ‘man bags’, and purses designed for CC are excellent options for concealment, but they present their own set of problems regarding potentially violent and determined thieves. On the one hand, wearing your purse crossbody style definitely makes it hard to swipe. On the flip side, if an assailant is determined enough, they’ll drag you along as they try to run with your purse. Worse yet, and becoming more common, the assailant will pull out knife to cut the strap, escalating the whole situation. It would be difficult to pull your weapon if he’s pulling you and your purse along with him as he tries to run with it.

Though it may be hard to conceal your carry piece wearing certain clothes, it is ALWAYS best to keep it on your body. You may need a few different holsters to accommodate the different ways you choose to dress, and if you know you’re going to be in an area that has a higher potential for being robbed or assaulted, it may be wise to dress in such a way to accommodate good concealment of your piece. All this being said, situational awareness is still key to avoiding most assailants.

Never carry a weapon unless it is ready to shoot.

I was taught never to carry a weapon with a round chambered. Nor do I store one that way. That's how I interpret "ready to shoot". Chambering a round is not a crime. Possession may be!

#1: A concealed weapon is a concealed weapon, with all the legal implications thereof, regardless of whether a round is chamnbered. (Check your local laws, as I am not admitted to practice in your state)

According to the most recent stats on shootings,

80% are at 20 feet or less. 55% are at 7 feet or less. Average number of shots fired is 5. Average number of bullets that hit is 1. AVERAGE TIME FROM START OF GUNFIGHT UNTIL END IS 3.4 SECONDS

Since the only justification to employ deadly physical force in most cases is the presence of opposing deadly or grievous physical force, and since it is going to be over in less than 4 seconds, you do not have time to chamber a round.

Additionally, chambering a round requires two hands. In a deadly confrontation, you may not have both hands available, or be able to get them into action. Example, you are on street, condition Yellow. Perp suddenly approaches you and begins to draw his knife or pistol. You are close enough to him that no retreat is possible. You grab his right (gun/knife) hand with your left hand, move it down and away, while you draw with your right hand.

Now, unless you let go of his gun/knife hand, how are you going to chamber a round?

Modern semi-automatic pistols are completely safe with a round chambered, safeties on. You may want to remove the round when storing the weapon, but never carry a weapon you are not ready to shoot in less time than it takes the perp to draw his weapon and shoot.... and remember, in most self-defense situations, the perp "gets the first move." In those situations, you cannot claim self-defense unless he performs some overt act.

Granted, there are time in Red, Orange and even some Yellow situations where you can have your hand on your weapon, but to display it means you are ready to kill the person involved if they continue their deadly or grievous actions against you... and in those situations, you do not have a tenth of a second to spare.

Yes, it's that serious.

“If you have a license does that apply?”

In most jurisdictions, yes.

If you are in a liberal run area, expect some blowback.

You can read the brandishing laws in your state to check.

People beg nowadays shamelessly

I was at a Shell by BNA three days ago filling up prior to returning a rental SUV and a girl with a toddler came up panhandling for gas money

I knew the drill and said no

My hands are full with nine dependents

I watched her hit up a black woman foolishly and then go get in a minivan with two seedy looking wiggers with her baby

This is just America today

No shame

Here in Nashville they beg on every major corner

Sometimes it is pitiful. Amputees and stuff and I give in

I give a lot to charity often personally and even have onnthis forum and been burned a few times but just straight out beggars

Nope

I’ll be more likely help a drunk bum get drunk

I’ve gone in and bought a 1.5 of cheap whiskey just to see their faces light up downtown

It’s party time by the Mission!

If you are truly honest and desperate Nashville is full of churches who will help you get your life back

A place to stay

Job

Channel to an apt

Food and clothing

If you’re just wandering the streets high or drunk it’s by choice

Most of them are mentally ill and the drink is like medication often for schizophrenia

Anyone talking to nobody or pooping in front of people on the sidewalk is sick

But you can’t do much with them so they wander

Nashville is about as far north as they winter unless they have squatter digs somewhere

I’ve done a bit of reading on situational awareness, but I am not expert by any means. But I try to be aware of what is going on around me..is it what should be going on..

My situation(post 150) took me by surprise. The man did not seem out of place at all. People in the parking lot doing as they normally do, my aggressor was dressed middle class, clean shaven, just walking a bit in front of me. No alarms went off at all.

I am not as charitable as I should be.

One time I saw a group of teenagers come into a Chinese restaurant with $100 bill that their mother gave them. I secretly paid for their dinner and had the waiter tell them to do a better job hiding the $100 bill in public places.

Glad you ok. That’s all that matters.

The Gunsite/Colonel Cooper “White (Green), Yellow, Orange, Red” system should be taught to every CCW.

Be well.

Sounds like you’re having a great time.

I’ve got a ‘14 Genesis Coupe but I don’t have that much fun with mine. Cops take a dim view of drifting in the DC Metro area. :)

“I am convinced We get in Gods way many times (not always) by helping people, They never get to the point of relying on God.”

I am glad you mentioned that. When I think of all the socialist programs firmly in place in our nation, there’s no wonder why so many families fall apart and why churches are no longer the central pillars of our communities. Government has stepped in to take the place of support from one’s family and Christian community. If a person really was a deadbeat, their family would know it and would refuse the handouts, giving the deadbeat the choice of either working or going hungry. Likewise, if a person was genuinely in need of assistance, family and church would most likely be aware of such and would fill the need, being blessed in the process. Now, our government hasn’t a clue about who is needy and who is gaming the system.
