The United States could be in for a long, cold winter as snow cover in Siberia reaches its highest point for this time of year in decades, the father of the Siberian Snow Theory has warned.
Snow cover in Siberia is sometimes used to predict winter weather in the US, and MIT climatologist Judah Cohen claims this years conditions are a textbook situation, Bloomberg reports.
Its thought that more snow in northern Eurasia signals the frigid temperatures set to hit the regions below.
And while the cold blast could strike anywhere among North America, Asia, or Europe, the expert warns the US may get hit harder than forecasters are expecting.

Global Warming sux
Algore must have a lot of conferences scheduled this winter.
The Dogberry trees have no zero Nada fruit this year so it should be a mild winter
They keep saying this, but we haven’t had a hard winter here in North Carolina for almost a decade. I’d like some serious cold to kill off the insects and vermin, not to mention some rain.
I believe the Cohen mentioned in this article, wrote a paper regarding this negative feedback, which states basically the melted arctic sea-ice is just being transferred to snow cover in Siberia/western Asia.
So it results in “large-scale, long-term winter cooling”.
Average is fine with me.
Just think, if it wasn’t for man caused global warming
it would be a whole lot colder.
I’ll check the farmers almanac
Bastardi has said the cold in the east for weeks due to how cold in Asia.
Joe Bastardi of WeatherBell.com has been discussing this for the last 3-4 weeks and has shown the historical proof for the connection about a heavy snowfall and low temperatures in Siberia are followed by the same in North America a few weeks later.
Seen many big storms puke out by the time they get here to Ohio, we’ll see...
For the rest of the month, western MD is 50-60s.
The birds who normally bug out in late September are still here.
My goats, the deer, the horses and cattle all have hardly what I would call “winter coats”.
The squirrels are hardly touching the obscene amount of walnuts in my yard.
[damn their eyes, now I have to rake them up]
Three days ago, I saw honeybees flying around.
I’m not seeing the usual invasion of Wolf Spiders roaming the house.
In fact, my back porch Orb Weaver is still throwing webs on the warmer days, since there are still some moths flitting around.
Weather forecasts are okay but I trust the critters who have to prepare for and survive brutal winters.
So I’m thinking *nope*.
We have a snow storm predicted here in the Cascade passes over the next few days. This is a little early. My wife and I both feel that this is going to be a cold and snowy winter in our area. We can’t really say why, more of a feeling.
Almost forgot...the bikers are still zipping around, too.
:)
“They keep saying this, but we havent had a hard winter here in North Carolina for almost a decade.”
Shhhh! You’re gonna jinx it!
I have a similar array of “Nope” symptoms.
Oh, sorry. I’ll shut up now.
Huh?
It’s too late to be early.
