Hope you enjoy.City Of New Orleans
I like this song a lot, but in some ways I prefer King of the road as a great travel tune.
I know every engineer on every train, all of their children and all of their names, every handout in every town, and every lock that ain’t locked when no one’s around.
Written and SUNG very well by Steve. Lived around the corner from the Earl and spent many evenings watching him perform there. Overalls always!
Another New Orleans song:
In The Heart Of The Night
(Poco)
Off of the Legend album, which was absolutely fabulous.
Trivia Fact: Comedian Phil Hartman did the cover art.
Arlo brought a bunch of excellent musicians, including his children and Ramblin’ Jack Elliot, to do a benefit for MusiCares, a charity for New Orleans musicians impacted by Hurricane Katrina.
I was there, and it was a mighty fine show. That song was a highlight.
The venue was the venerable Tipitina’s on Tchoupitoulas Street, a few months after the storm. The bar still stank of swamp water.
Yup. Loved it.
Loved Hartman too.
BTW....I think two of the Poco band members were from the group Buffalo Springfield.
PS —IIRC, I believe the deal was that Arlo and his group were actually riding the actual train, the City of New Orleans (it’s really a thing on Amtrack) and stopping to play numerous venues along the way, to raise funds.
Funny that it one of my faves and I like to sing it as well.
“Don’ pay no union dues” - ;)
One of my cradle songs. (Thanks Mommy!)
If he calls himself a libertarian, then it’s not the definition I’m familiar with. I have seen him in concert many times and I’ve always been a huge fan, but he’s a lefty. If you hear him talk during the concert you will realize this. Keep in mind, he made a gag Christmas song years ago how Santa wears a red suit and he’s a hippy communist...
This has always been one of my favorites of his because my Dad worked on the railroad for 45 years and I grew up around a railroad. When he performs this in concert, oftentimes he just performs solo on a keyboard. He’s a great musician, can play something like 14 different instruments.
We’re getting around that time of year (Thanksgiving) where his biggest hit is relevant (Alice’s Restaurant). It all happened about two Thanksgivings ago, that’s about two years ago on Thanksgiving when my friend and I decided to visit Alice, her husband Ray and Focho the dog.....
Did not know that — thanks.
From London, England living in Canada opposite the UP of Michigan. I remember a small downstairs bar in our neighbouring city called the Hickler House. I sank back a beer and someone played this on the juke box.
I remember being sneered at in the British army as raw conscript. I mentioned that one day, I would like to go to the USA. A cockney voice said "yewll nevah get to Americaw". (You will never get to America). There I was in small town Michigan and I remembered the sneer and savoured the moment.
The video with Willie Nelson is a nice piece of Americana. "The graveyard of the rusted automobiles"- then a young woman feeding her infant the old fashioned way.
Excuse the ramble.
Don’t you know me I’m your native son ...
