Quick-thinking New Zealanders managed to film the scene in Wellington while the powerful 7.8 magnitude earthquake struck near Christchurch.
Their clips show flashes of green, white and blue in the sky over a span of a few seconds.
Zachary Bell said he filmed a video at ‘the peak of the shaking’, noting that ‘the sky began to light up with colours’ over the sea.
Another video posted on Instagram shows clear, bright flashes of light during the earthquake that killed two people and led to tsunamis.

It’s like the auroras in reverse................coming from inside the earth instead of space, maybe even a mixture of the two...................
Could be caused by increased methane seepage mixed with sulfur compounds — both are very natural constituents in the earth’s upper crust.

Yes, either the piezoelectric or triboelectric (friction) effects.
These piezoelectric discharges have occurred over entirely unpopulated areas as well. Not an AC phenomenon.

that wasn’t over the sea... could very easily be electrical lines parting and grounding over the ridge.
When you break millions of tons of rock you going get some sparking going on.
It looks like lightning...
