Actually the Mafia is an organized crime family that knows it must exist in a society that is nominally free in the sense of capitalism. Otherwise they have no product to sell as all is controlled. They thrive on the limits of what is banned and what society wants. Aside from blatant criminal activities such as robbery they are the spearpoint of capitalism. They are bad people, but government control is many times worse.
Al Capone was a very bad man. He sold alcohol and prostitution. What our government is doing is far worse. Capone was a criminal because of insane laws. He was a businessman. He had a product the public wanted and sold it.
