Squirrel breaks into B.C. home, trashes the place

OAK BAY, B.C. — A bowl of nuts helped officers in Oak Bay, B.C., tail a suspected burglar.

But as Const. Sheri Lucas investigated what appeared to be a break-in at a home in the Victoria suburb, she quickly realized the suspect already had a tail — its own.

Lucas had been called by homeowners who found their house trashed when they returned from an extended vacation.

As Lucas and her partner surveyed the mess, they spotted an empty bowl of nuts, shells strewn everywhere and some tell-tale gnaw marks in chocolate left on a counter.

That’s when a panicked and angry squirrel was found cornered in the house and the two officers used a towel and broom to scoop it up and set it free.

The homeowners were advised to block vents that may have been the point of entry and Lucas says the destruction left by the rampant rodent was extraordinary.

“We aren’t sure why there was so much damage,” she says.

“Maybe the chocolate gave it a high it didn’t expect?”

I lot of people hate squirrels, but they are just cool animals. Lots of personality, and intelligence.

Yeah, they are fun to watch. The recent video where the squirrel carried a GoPro camera aloft and went leaping through the branches was truly amazing. That said, the local (north Texas) squirrels seem to be of the fox squirrel variety - and they are both large and very destructive. Much worse than their little gray cousins that I knew in south Louisiana.

After they caused me several thousand dollars' worth of repairs to gutters, facia boards and soffit, I decided to take matters into my own hands (in the form of a Benjamin Marauder .25 air rifle). It's not that I hate the furry little bastards, I just can't afford to have them around. I wish the damned red-tailed hawks in the area would cut the squirrels' numbers down, but they seem very to have a strong preference for the local rabbits and leave Bre'r Squirrel unscathed.

he’ll know better than to try to get inside a house again.

No way, it'll figure out a better escape route.......

Back in the late ‘50s, we had a pet squirrel. One evening when everyone was out of the house, it caught fire and burned to the ground. The Fire Dept. said they suspected it was started with a problem with the wiring in the attic.

We never found the squirrel.

There is a squirrel that hops onto the ledge outside the window beside my computer desk. He peers in at me when I am working and seems quite interested.
The first time he came, he sat there for a long time and didn’t seem frightened when I touched the glass. He tried to sniff my finger.
Now whenever I plan to be at the computer for awhile, I put some shelled pecans or bits of crackers outside on the ledge, then close the window and wait for him to come back. He almost always does.

Sometimes the cat sits by my computer. She and the squirrel stare thru the glass at one another. They’re both thinking, ha ha, you can’t get me.

Squirrels trapped inside a home can do immense damage as they will try and claw their way through window frames to get outside.
I saw a nice country home in which one (1) did thousands of dollars in damage.

I had squirrels invade my attic several years ago. $5000 damage before I got the last one with a pellet gun.

The bodies still lie there, desiccated, mummified, and forlorn. Just as a warning to any other vermin/rodents that try to live under my roof.

I HATE squirrels. Furry-tailed rats is all they are.

.
Squirrels are nothing like rats.

They are usually very gregarious.

I once had a ground squirrel come up to me to thank me for killing a rattlesnake.

Years ago, we had a black squirrel that would chase my kids in the yard. One day, I tossed out some stale bread. The squirrel reached for it, sat up on his hind legs and gave me a look that said “thank you.” I said out loud, “no, thank you” then I shot it.

I don’t mind squirrels but this one was aggressively chasing my young children.

I’ve had them both. IN the house (after I lost my cat). I LOATHE their very existence on this planet.

"As Lucas and her partner surveyed the mess..."

As in lesbians?

Maybe they can push for a "hate crime" charge and be added to the fake list of "victims."

The Black Squirrels of B.C. are an invasive species which has driven our native red squirrels out of the milder parts of their habitat. There are no black squirrels in the interior of the province.

The little b*stards are vicious and not shy with humans.

They obviously do not belong in the house.

If the house is built correctly, they can’t get in.

We had a VERY bad year for rats a couple of years ago. They were literally running on the roads at night. The old adage “if you don’t see any, you’ve got ten, if you see one you’ve got 100” was an understatement. My whole neighbourhood had them in the houses, in the trees, in the woods, in the RV park, in the HOSPITAL (1/2 mile away), everywhere. This year it’s not so bad, I have eliminated only 5 in the last 2 months.

The squirrels chewed their way through the fascia boards between the eavestroughs and the shingles’ dripline. They were using the stucco on the south wall as a raceway.
My mail carrier thought I was kidding him until he saw it with his own eyes.

I don’t care how poorly built you think my house is (built in 1964, has survived several earthquakes, dozens of serious windstorms of 50+mph, and a blizzard that dropped 4’ of snow in 30 hours), they would have gotten in your house too, I guarantee.

Unless your cat has access to the attic... < BG >
