(CNN)Former Republican Secretary of State Colin Powell said Tuesday he'll vote for Democratic nominee Hillary Clinton, a high-profile snub of his party's standard-bearer, Donald Trump.
Powell, who also served in the Reagan and George H.W. Bush administrations, backed President Barack Obama in both the 2008 and 2012 campaigns. He announced his plan to a Long Island group during a luncheon.
The announcement was confirmed by Powell's chief of staff, Peggy Cifrino. Aides informed Clinton of Powell's support after her early voting rally Tuesday afternoon in Florida. She is grateful for his support, one aide said.
Later, Clinton's campaign tweeted, "Proud to have the endorsement of General Powell, a decorated soldier and distinguished statesman," signed with an "H" indicating her personal approval.
The former chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff has had tough words for both major party candidates. Hacked emails released in September showed Powell strongly condemning Trump, labeling him a "national disgrace and an international pariah."
In one email dated August 3, Powell wrote, "Trump is nuts. Everybody wants me to speak out, but I will pick the time and place for maximum effect like I did in 2008 and 2012. Right now, Trump is his worst own enemy."

Colin Powell knows deep in his heart that he does not deserve the recognition he has received. He was a product of affirmative action. He took credit for the accomplishments of people like Norman Schwarzkopf. Like many sycophants he chose to present himself as a Republican. We can thank Donald Trump for exposing these frauds. He calls Trump a disgrace yet Powell is a good friend of Calypso Louis Farrakhan. He revealed his character in the Scooter Libby affair.

He was all bristling about the e-mail scandal when Hillary said, “Powell did it, too, and nobody cared.” She must’ve thrown him some cash, promised to start inviting him to the good cocktail parties again, and offered him a good front-office job “when” she wins.

No joke. Sugar-coat it all you want, Colon Bowel was FIRED by GW Bush. The only reason Bowel didn’t fall straight on his face during Gulf War I was that his leadership kept guiding him in the right direction, often forcibly. At that time, there was actually good leadership in the form of Cheney and Generals Schwarzkopf and Horner. If it wasn’t for those guys, Colon Bowel would’ve steered the ship immediately onto the rocks.
