Help - What should I know/Not Know about buying an AR15? (Vanity)

I would like a little bit of help... Went to a few gun stores looking at A15s and as the shop keeper says. Like buying a car. Lots of manufacturers, features, and options to consider, then you pick your sights, and stock and on and on. WOW, I did not expect all that and prices are all over the place too.

I have several semi-auto pistols, so not a novice.

My wife and I are considering buying SIG MPX SBR with suppressor May just get the 5.56mm version:

FWIW, my wife and I form 4'd on a gun trust 3 weeks after 41F ruling. Still waiting to see how long new form 4s take...probably a year.

Enough with the chickenshit defeatist talk. Do we think 2A is worth defending or not?

The guns listed in HR 4269, currently in committee, are precisely the ones to purchase before they get banned. The list is long.

exactly correct. $500, or $400 if you shop very well and put it together yourself (sights not included!)

good advice, except even those aren’t really cheap. Anderson and Del-Ton are good companies. Starting price $500.

***Ensure that it’s chambered for 5.56 or has a wylde chamber that takes both 5.56 and .223. Stay away from .223 chambered.***

I have read this for years about the difference in the 5.56 and the .223.
5.56 has a different chamber “lede” and a thicker case than the .223 and that is it.

Now I know it is all BUNKUM the last COLT AR-15 (M-4) I bought has 5.56 on the box with serial number, and the rifle has .223 stamped on the rifle with the same serial number.

I’ve been shooting both 5.56 and .223 in Ruger Mini-14 for the last forty years with no problems.

My point, I guess, is that you need to get into the game. There are plenty of ARs these days, like Del-Ton, DPMS and a load of others that are reasonably priced.

There's no sense popping 2k+ on a Larue Tactical when you may find you don't like the length, feel, or hell, don't like ARs in general. Get something, start shooting it...you'll know pretty quick what you like or don't.

This will probably lead you to more expensive options, but it is nonetheless a good read.

There could be a run any time. Get _something_ and know that you don’t have to spend more than $500 to get into the game.

I know this is what she wants to do. But, it is not really something she can do.

Eventually, there will be a statute defining the AR-15 as an “assault rifle” and it will have to modified to limit clip capacity to 6 or 8 or 10 shots.

But, I don’t see doom for the platform.

AR-15 with a gas driven upper like an ARAK21, in 300 blackout, sub-sonic ammo, suppressed and hi-end scoped. The long range defense weapon of the future.

But, as you say, get in the game now for $500, stockpile some .223 and keep fingers crossed.

Don’t buy an AR in an ally behind a government building nor out of a car trunk you found out about on Craigslist.

Oh I see. Ok. The fellow I was thinking about figures he can do it. My hesitation was that he’s not really very handy. He is slow and careful tho so that - and his friends - should help his project succeed. Hopefully, ha! We will try to monitor their progress if they find the good parts they’re looking for. Thanks for input

Oh I see. Interesting. Maybe he will do the ar then. We will see what he can learn. He wanted to do an ak - but I bet he will go the ar if the ak isn’t a workable project

Ha! The prospective craftsman said he saw kids making good ak’s on YouTube or a similar site. So he figures he can do it too. Ha! On the other hand, he might just ruin a good shovel? Ha ha! Right now he’s looking for a good parts kit but maybe we will send him down to Sears for that shovel ? Ha!

Buy a known, mainstream brand.

Definitely go with a 5.56 mm barrel/chamber. I learned that the hard way. Bought an upper that was stamped 5.56 but when I fired that through the weapon, it blew primers out the back end of the round and those primers got stuck between the BCG and the upper receiver. Not good. It had obviously been reamed for .223, not 5.56, and the chamber was overpressured when 5.56 was fired through it The chamber had to be reamed to 5.56 via warranty.

The true 5.56 mm chamber, on the other hand, can fire .223 safely.

There’s several good inexpensive manufacturers. I built a half dozen Andersons from kits for my nephews. They’re great!
