I would like a little bit of help... Went to a few gun stores looking at A15s and as the shop keeper says. Like buying a car. Lots of manufacturers, features, and options to consider, then you pick your sights, and stock and on and on. WOW, I did not expect all that and prices are all over the place too.
I have several semi-auto pistols, so not a novice.
Welcome to FR, you’ll get more opinions han you can shake a stick at on this thread.
Why an AR? They are likely to be among the first confiscated.
(They’re black and scary)
Buy an AK-47.
Go to the online Palmetto States Armory website. Look up their specials on uppers and lowers ... weekend specials will be dramatically reduced prices for mil spec uppers which can be shipped directly to your address and you sign for delivery. Buy two milspec lowers for AR15 and have them delivered to your FFL locally (these are the registered part). Match the uppers you buy to the lowers and enjoy. You might need to buy a complete bolt carrier group and charging handle for the uppers (about $100), so spend a few extra dollars and buy the Boron finished ones. You might have 1100 invested at that point, so be sure to order their 5.56 ammo special that includes 10 magazines (about $400).
My mistrake. Neighbor wants to build a high quality ak47 first. Any recommended 80 pct parts brands models vendors he will appreciate your best advice, ideas. ( also I don’t see him as an especially skilled craftsman so “foolproof” will be a helpful addition to the specifications, ha! Thanks mucho. )
I have two of those, bought years ago from a buddy who is a former Texas Ranger. He sold them to me for what they cost him, $420 each. One is still in he box and never shot. As you say it’s a fantastic piece of gear.
Cabelas has been running ads every few months. 5-600 dollars. They had the DMPS Oracle on sale for 560....Slap a quad rail on it and optics and/or laser.
I also agree on the Colt LE6920. Nice rifle.
However, I spent the weekend with a S&W MP10. Tack driver at 200 yards with optics. Oh boy, what fun that was, however I did swap out the trigger for a 2 stage...
BLOAT
I hear they are available but the AK doesnot separate into upper and lower like the AR.
Or a few Javelins for those pesky UN and DHS APCs that roll up into your yard when Hillary starts the confiscations..../s
I have not seen it but I hear there is a YouTube of a guy making an AK from a coal shovel. You might check that out.
Here’s what you need to know. Within 3 months, if Hillary wins you’ll be turning it over the Feds, do not buy an AR-15, go after some other gun that is not on the “current” target list. The AR-15 is the first to go, being caught with one will be 5 years or more in prison, not joking.
Buy a generic gun as cheap as you can find one new and shoot it for a year.
then you will know what you really want. You will get all your money back in a private sale via Craigslist or the like.
Uh huh.
But, if you wrap it in tinfoil it will not be detected by the purple laser scanners.
A .223 Wylde chamber is used on .223 caliber rifle barrels to allow them to safely fire either .223 Remington or 5.56x45mm NATO ammunition.
This opens up more ammo choices.

“Within 3 months, if Hillary wins youll be turning it over the Feds, do not buy an AR-15, go after some other gun that is not on the current target list.”
Unless you’re willing to own it for just 3 months and then donate it to the Feds, OR are willing to use it, and perhaps die, standing up for our God given rights trying to keep it. “Tragic boating accidents” will be about the least humorous ‘joke’ in existence at that point.
The AR-15 is the first gun to go, trust me, they won’t even attempt to grandfather this one in.
Check out sportsmansguide.com for a selection of AR 5.56 starting at $474.00. You can search by gauge and compare 12 models by price, features, and user reviews.
+1. What he said.
Here are the photos of the Coal Shovel becoming an AK-47:
