Find out what’s feeding off YOUR modem:

http://www.komando.com/downloads/2251/see-who-is-stealing-your-internet/2

“Each computer has a unique IP address, or Internet Protocol Address. Some computer hardware have addresses, too. They’re known as MACs, or Media Access Control.”

“As soon as you boot up Wireless Network Watcher, you’ll see all the detected devices come up on the list. You should be able to recognize all the devices on it. If you don’t, you know somebody is connected without your permission.”

Download instructions

Click on the blue link below. Scroll down the page until you see in purple, “Download Wireless Network Watcher with full install/uninstall support (wnetwatcher_setup.exe). Wireless Network Watcher will automatically download. Open the executable file and follow the step-by-step installation instructions.

Good tip. I tried it out. A couple of things on my network I can’t identify at the moment. I can vouch for Nirsoft utilities. I’ve used some of them. Amazing tiny programs.

Netgear Genie does a similar thing.

Until I ran around checking all the MAC addresses of my connected stuff, I was freaking out.

:D

I bought a power strip on Amazon (basically an extension cord) and the thing showed up as feeding off my modem.

Was this by any chance one of those power strips with a wireless remote?

Android has a free app called ‘Wifi Analyzer’ that I highly recommend. It will list the MACs, the APs, the channels and their frequencies, signal strength for each AP, display nearby SIDs and their relative strengths (so you see your neighbors and avoid clashing on their channels), etc.

It has a really neat Star Trek Tricoder mode, where you can walk and wave your smartphone around and it beeps faster or slower depending on the signal strength as you move. It is a wonderful tool for finding dead spots and for properly positioning your APs.

I had a rotating ceiling exhaust fan that I didn’t realize was totally messing up my signal strength (rotating metal is bad because it scatters the signal faster than the proessor can adapt). I replaced the fan blades with plastic ones, and it boosted my signal strength by 80%.

It’s also great for finding the strongest signal location in a coffee shop or restaurant so you know exactly where to sit to get the best signal.

Wifi Analyzer is a wonderful app that I think everyone with an Android phone should have if they are serious about locating APs properly and finding dead zones. It’s free (shows ads).

Refrigerators and home heating/ac and lighting that are connected to the internet. Does not make sense to me.
I was watching This Old House on PBS and they showed a door lock with keypad that was also wired to the internet.
Said all you need to use is a smartphone....
You know a key always works. The fancy lock just complicates things. Now add in hackers. I do not want the Chinese to know how much milk and eggs I have in the frig!

Nevermind that, you don't want your insurance company to know.

So this is why I had to pump five rounds into my refrigerator when it tried to kill me.

"I'm afraid I'll come home someday and find you screwing the toaster."

"You'll just have to trust me."
