Dodge Challenges for muscle car supremacy

Dodge’s Challenger Scat Pack Shaker (and no, the scat pack doesn’t mean it leaves stuff behind it on the road) is not only a great muscle car experience, it’s also an interesting lesson in semantics.

That’s because it teaches us that the word "standard transmission" no longer applies to a stick shift, at least in this instance. Nope, in this case, the 485 "horsepowerhouse" comes "standard" with an automatic transmission, whereas the great Tremec six speed stick manual transmission is a thousand dollar option.

And a good option, too - better than a lot of the nannies for which you can pay more!

And all for 57 grand! Well, to be fair, the base Challenger Scat Pack Shaker starts at a still substantial but somewhat less frightening $48,895 and, also to be fair, you get a LOT of car for that.

It starts with the retro design, of course, a design that very nearly made me want to seek out a couple of gigantic earth movers to test its ultimate stopping power. Fortunately, the urge reached its vanishing point quickly…

LOL! When I took drivers ed in ‘63 (age give away) we got to watch a lot of films (”What’s that?” cried a millenial) of the results of horrific gory car crashes with body parts etc. Our practice cars were Ford Galaxies with 6 cylinders & 3 on the tree. Snowflakes today would need psychiatric help after watching those.

“Almost as fast “

That is faster than the Dodge by half a second 0-60.

I saw an FR-S at a dealership a few months ago. It looks like a good handling car. One of the non V8 sports cars I like is the Nissan 370z. I'm hoping that some new models come out over the next few years. I have three years before my youngest daughter finishes college. Then daddy can play again.

Just imagine if you could drive it around Washington DC and chase all the congressmen around, jumping curbs and such. What fun!

I’ll put up half if you put up the other half. You can have it the first two weeks of the month. Deal?

Driving an FR-S, for me, is like driving a go cart or slot car. Unbelievably fun. Still, after 110.000 miles.

I also average about 32-34 mpg.

At least Chrysler has the sense to manufacture what Ford & GM has all but abdicated.

Partial to automatics myself. Being able to put it in drive and enjoy the engine is not overrated.

Well, if we’re gonna do it we may as well go with the HellCat. Of course we’ll have to go to Carson Dodge to lower the tax hit. ;-)

When I bicycle commuted from a Seattle suburb, I was shocked at how many classic cars I saw parked in garages on my way to work.

I live in a neighborhood where a lot of houses have shops on the properties. Many of those have classic cars & trucks in them. I think they don't get driven much any more because they are becoming too valuable to risk on the public roads with people texting and driving.

when I am in my 70 Dodge Challenger R/T and pull up next to a new Challenger, my car is about 2/3rd the size of the new Challengers And they don’t look over at me.
Mind you, even the 5.7 versions could probably take me,the Hell cats would leave me in the dust. BUT it’s survived me for 40 years, and the 1st 25 years were the hardest.I could spice the 440 up, or put a late model 6.4 SMPI in it if I had the $3500 for the plug and play engine management system. But that’s all right. I used to think my car was heavy, compared to my 68 RR but it looks pretty thin next to the steroid fed new ones. I especially liked the ad with George Washington driving a new Challenger a few years ago. But he was chasing the English and not the Italians. For any one that cares, Lee Iacocca wrote a great article in the issue currently on the shelf of Chrysler Power Magazine about how we better save America NOW. Also, Rob Wolf, owner and Editor of Mopar Collector’s Guide writes very powerful editorials about the elite using environmental laws to subjugate us. The title of this month’s editorial, “Detroit...the Canary in the Mine Shaft of a DNC run USA!” is followed by a warning to left leaning subscribers or readers that this month’s column will upset them. A good read.

I had a blast with my ‘70 R/T. It’s the one I taught Viggo Mortensen on for our remake of “Vanishing Point.”

When I was 19 I almost bought a Plymouth Super Bee.I decided, instead,to join the Army (thanks to encouragement from my draft board).

Today,if I was looking for speed,I'd gravitate more toward a Mercedes E63 or BMW M5.

But I like my diesel cruiser...53MPG....16 gallon tank.

I have a copy of that version, recorded of the network viewing of it. Did it ever make it to DVD?
When I was about to buy my Challenger, I also test drove a 70 Superbird. The Superbird was sick and ran like crap. The woman whose husband bought it new didn’t like it. Same money,$1500, the Challenger scared me. It still had F70 Bias ply goodyears on it and I chose....poorly? Nah, nah.
