Pedals, a beloved American black bear who walked upright and strolled around the suburbs of New Jersey like a Hanna-Barbera cartoon come to life, was believed to have been killed by a hunter last week, animal welfare activists said. His age was not known.
Since 2014 residents of Rockaway Township have posted videos online of the bear strolling through their neighborhoods and backyards with admirable posture, his forepaws pulled close to his chest. Many commented that on first glance, Pedals resembled a man wearing a bear suit.
But it appears that local celebrity was not enough to save Pedals during the state’s five-day hunting season for black bears, which began on Monday and allowed hunters to kill bears with a bow and arrow for the first time since the 1960s. He was one of 487 bears killed by hunters in New Jersey last week.

If Pedals was walking around in the upright, he does become a much bigger easier to kill target.
my relatives in NJ see bears on their property at least weekly. Didn’t realize the count was so high as to have almost 500 killed and I’m sure plenty left.

Okay, that’s it. All bear hunting must now come to an immediate halt, because Pedals the Bear has bit the dust. Let’s humanize all those bears. Never mind that many of them would tear you to pieces if given the chance. Pedals is the reason to not have the season. No bear hunting season allowed, until of course we are overrun with bear population and they munch on your dog for breakfast and your cat for lunch, and possibly YOU for dinner.
And many thanks to those hunters. A bear is a bear - doesn’t matter if he walks on his front legs. Hopefully the hunter does not get the Cecil treatment.

My niece and nephew-in-law live in a new development in a rural area of New England.They tell me that on occasion they see bears in the wooded area nearby.They even have a running joke where they tell the kids to go outside and play with the bears.
If a bear shows up in my yard (not likely) doesn’t matter if it is hunting season or not, he is a dead bear.
Pedals is a cute name like a child’s tricycle. Pedals was last seen chewing on joggers in the park. How cute.
