Payson mom 'surprised' by baby born in Walmart
Herald Extra ^ | 10/12/2016 | Kurt Hanson

Posted on 10/12/2016 12:11:56 PM PDT by Gamecock

At about 2 a.m. Sunday, Cecelia Rivas felt a pain deep in her stomach. She knew the baby was on its way.

She woke her husband up, alerted him to the situation, but soon realized she didn’t have everything she needed for her baby boy’s birth.

“I thought it was time to go to Walmart and get some things I needed,” said Rivas through a translator.

Rivas told her husband she needed to go to the local Walmart in Payson, but he told her he would go and she could stay. But she disagreed, and told him she was going and he could stay and watch the kids.

She felt her labor pains getting stronger at about 5:30 a.m. while she was checking out, so she made a point to get ready to leave.

But it was too late. Her water broke and the baby was coming. As she was paying, she could feel her baby’s head, and a woman grabbed her from behind, helping her to the ground.

“I just want to say thanks to the lady behind me who helped me,” Rivas said.

The woman got Rivas down, made the area clear and essentially prepped for delivery. Before too long, baby Matias was born.

“I was really surprised and really scared,” Rivas said. “But they told me not to worry, and then, my baby was there on my chest.”

This was Rivas’s third child and the labor was relatively short.

“The more babies you have, the faster your labors usually tend to go,” said Janette Barney, director of labor and delivery at Mountain View Hospital in Payson. “Monitor those contractions. If they’re becoming closer together and getting progressively stronger, that’s usually the biggest indicator for labor.”

Rivas and her baby, Matias Perez, were transported to Mountain View Hospital and are doing well, with a few minor concerns. Barney said Matias was placed on antibiotics when he and his mother arrived, primarily as a precaution.

“We look and see if there were any signs of infection … the baby was a little cold and did have some respiratory distress initially,” she said. “But the baby had a turnaround and has done fine since.”

Rivas and Matias will likely be released within a week once he has a clean bill of health. Then Matias can meet his two siblings, a 5-year-old sister and a 15-month-old brother.

“Everything was such a surprise. He really didn’t give me any time,” Rivas laughed. “But when I saw him, I was so happy.”

I have never been in or seen a Walmart because they only have one in L.A. ... and it’s in the scary part of town.

But I didn’t know one could shop at that hour!

Perhaps WalMart could open a special check-out line for deliveries, and save us thousands. :)

I had a similar experience in Walmart.
Felt the stomach cramping and made it to the Men’s room in time to give birth to something that looked a lot like Obama and smelled like Hillary.

**But I didn’t know one could shop at that hour!**

Some places are just more interesting LATE at night. Walmart, Waffle House....

When Mrs Gamecock was pregnant with our second child she developed a late night craving for ice cream. We lived on Fort Jackson at the time and there is a Walmart right outside the gate.

I got dressed and drove there at 1am. I was amazed to see a man and woman with a three year old boy wearing footie pajamas in tow. Now what do you think they drug this poor kid out at 1am to buy? A new TV.

I have never felt the need to go out at 0-dark-30 and buy a new TV, but that is part of the charm of Walmart late at night.

Some people work second shift or third shift, and this is their free time. Other people are just friggin weird.

Some Walmart’s are open 24 hours a day. The one near me is only open from 6 A.M. to midnight, but I see there are 3 in the New Orleans area that are open 24 hours a day..

Things can progress more quickly than you expect and without some of the signs they tell you to look for. One thing they stress is get to the hospital within an hour when your water breaks. Woke up in labor (5:30 am) with the second baby but didn’t get to the hospital right away because my water didn’t break. It seemed intense but (young pregnancy brain) I kept thinking I had plenty of time since my water hadn’t broken yet. The drive there was interesting because by then I knew it didn’t matter -baby was coming right now! We made it there a few minutes before he was born at 7:20 am.

This woman’s story makes me think of “Where the Heart Is”.

But does it take both of them dragging their kid out, in his jammies, to do so?

Re: Yep seems a strange story. She knew she was in labor but needed to make sure she went to Walmart, as opposed to asking her husband to get things they need. Very odd

Not necessarily. Some husbands are not so great when you send them to the store. Maybe she knew exactly what she needed but thought her husband wouldn’t know what she was talking about. Especially if what she wanted was not labeled in Spanish. And if her previous labor was much longer, she probabably thought she had plenty of time.

“needed to make sure she went to Walmart, as opposed to asking her husband to get things they need. “

I’m guessing you’re male and have never had a husband, lol. ;-) They can’t be trusted to shop correctly in times of crisis.

Customer service is almost always better in the middle of the night. The help has a choice of stocking shelves or helping the customer. And before they had the self service checkout, you didn’t have to deal with lines at the register. Just keep your eye on the other customers, and a clear path to an exit.
