But by any true warrior standard (i.e. Genghis Khan) Colonel Kurtz was the sane one, he was charged with waging war on an enemy — Kurtz was pissed off that his men were dying because the politicians wanted the US to wage war with The Marquess of Queensberry rules for fighting and the enemy was fighting with no rules. In the movie, Kurtz was very clear on what the mission was — It was the politicians that kept yanking at his leash, he finally bit the owner and took matters into his own hands.
