You don’t want to be in this one. Remember that this hurricane is not only strong, but moving very slow. Even if you survive you will live in terror for a long time. There is even some possibility that it could reach Cat 5. There is picture floating around of Haiti. It said that only 1% of homes remain standing in a particular city.

Andrew flattened everything in its path .
We stayed through Hurricane Andrew. Then it became cat 4. Then it became cat 5. Worst decision we ever made in our lives. We were on the broward Dade line. It turned south from us. Kendall and Cutler Ridge looked like an A Bomb went off. There was so much debris you couldn’t even see where the streets were. Just house foundations left. We left Florida for 18 years. Moved back to the Panhandle. It’s an easy and quick drive to Alabama or other inland safety. I would never wait till the last minute to try to outrun a monster storm. Definitely wouldn’t hang around again either.
She is in a brick (looks more like concrete) building. She had her license suspended and has no insurance. I’ve been trying to help her get that straightened out but not fast enough for Matthew. She is basically stranded. Her ex is a pr*ck. I ask all Freepers to keep her and her kids in your prayers. Both myself and My sister are a nervous wreck.

It’s been a while (1969) since was at Cocoa beach—seem to remember was rather flat and of low elevation going west from the coast. What are the predictions for storm surge in this specific case? Most everyone whom has been injured or died in a hurricane, succumbed to the hazard of the storm surge flooding, rather than wind driven debris.
Had a friend with a business on Hwy.90 in Biloxi, Ms.—they bailed for a safer inland location during Katrina. Afterwards, the only remains of the commercial structure was bolts protruding from the concrete foundation. The surge was exceptional in height; and, carried perhaps ten miles past the beach into the back-bay area.
The winds along the coast of Florida may be higher than those experienced along the gulf coast in the 2005 landfall. The storm’s approach to land will likely not drive a similar surge (29 feet at Cantore’s bunker position). The winds alone may be sufficient for destruction.
Electric power out for one to two weeks—fuel, food, water will likely remain in short supply for an extended period (100 miles inland from the Katrina landfall, power was out for 11 days—fuel shipments for phone backup power was threatened with high-jack.) Standing structures may be poor shelter afterward. Insects will be an issue afterward—potentially dengue, malaria, zika, etc. blown in from other areas. If not prepared (this moment) to be self sufficient for the next two weeks, reconsider evacuation.

Thanks, just called her and told her if she is afraid, to call the sheriff to come take her to shelter. She is 50/50 after I told her it was coming in at 130 mph. Hopefully she will give in and go. She is more concerned with keeping her son in a familiar environment. I told her not to wait til the last minute to decide to leave. She has her mattress and dresser up against her bedroom window and that will be there safe room. She has a bed in the closet for her son to sleep in and the rest will sleep on mattresses on the floor. Seems like she has settled herself in for the long ride. Smh...

Stay away from outside walls and windows, and seek protection from flying projectiles driven through the building exterior. Interior hallway and storage closets offer the most shielded spaces within a dwelling. A powerful hurricane wind is similar in destructive potential as compared to a tornado.
Storm surge from hurricane often trap occupants on the first and second levels of structures. Climbing to a second or third floor may present other hazards. It is very common to suffer roof damage; or, loss of a roof in a sustained wind which fatigues nails and other fasteners of the construction.
A designated shelter is often the better option.

VERY concerned about her sons strong reaction and trauma DURING the storm more so than the impact a safe, unfamiliar place would have. But maybe that is something maturity brings. An understanding of regretful decisions that turned out a million times worse than I thought they would. Her reaction is one thing. Her autistic child who is already very concerned is another. I will pray for them.

IT will get very, very scary. She really should consider going to a shelter where there will be generators to keep the lights running. Her son may feel safer with more people around to help take his mind off of the storm.
Which apartments does she live in? I am in PSL.
