Vets warn people against buying 'flat-faced' dogs

Vets are warning would-be dog owners to think twice before buying breeds with fashionably "flat-faced" features because of concerns over their welfare.

Pugs, bulldogs, French bulldogs and shih-tzus have become sought-after in the UK, despite wide-ranging health problems.

Their appeal is attributed to having "squashed" faces and wrinkled noses.

I've always been a hound man, myself. Dogs with actual snouts. Flat-faced, perpetually snorting to catch a breath, and slobber-prone is no way to go through life.

My big slobbering Newfoundlands had good lives. ...but not flat faces.

Designer dogs for designer people. Pathetic.

Nothing better than a mutt for loyalty and companionship.

Meanwhile, in Londonistan....the most dangerous breed of all propogates, but let’s concern ourselves with flat faced mutts instead.

I love to go to the dog park with my dogs. There was a very cute “flat faced” small dog there with only one eye. I asked what happened. The owner told me that it POPPED OUT while the dog was playing with another dog, and she had to pick it up and run to the vet with the dog and the eye!

Apparently with some of these breeds, this can and does happen because of the shape of the skull and eye socket. This alone would be a big turnoff!

People can have more than one concern at a time.

Actually shih-tzus have been great lapdogs for my wife and kids.

Not the smarmy kennel show variety.

Had a shitzu once. Well, the ex did anyway. A little short on the zu, though. The ex-wife was the only one who he would allow to pick him up. Needed freakin’ chainmaille gloves to pick that little POS up. Daughter was 7 years old and sitting Indian-style (can you still say that LOL!) in front of the TV one night and the dog came up and laid down in her lap. She looked at me as if a rattlesnake crawled into her sleeping bag. Not a fan of little dogs.

I sent just this article to Howie Carr. He has 2 pugs and talks about them frequently on his show.
#puglivesmatter!!

On another note, my daughter’s friend’s french bulldog just recently died in the back yard on an especially hot day. He overheated. Wonder if he just couldn’t pant enough to cool himself. :(

Seems like I always end up with whichever dog picks me (or my kids when they were home.) You can’t go wrong when the furball falls for you or your kids first.

And, a couple o’ times we took in abused rescues. Those are a little different but all turned into good family pets.

Mixed breeds can also be better at police detection work than the pure breeds, according to Alex Kava. “Every dog is different.”

Actually , designer dogs are mutts . A designer dog is usually the result of breeding two purebreds . We have a mini dach / papillon . 5 pounds of love and entertainment !

One other thing we liked about shih-tzus is they have fur instead of hair so they don’t shed.

Those types of dogs don’t do well in heat. Sorry to hear of her loss.
