Is the decline of the Latino community bad news for the US?

SALT LAKE CITY, Utah (ABC4 News) - A new report by the Pew Center for Research shows the Latino population is on the decline. The slow down is attributed to two things: immigration and birth rates.

The research shows the annual average growth rate for Latinos from 2007 to 2014 was 2.8% down from 4.4% between 2000 to 2007 and a dramatic decrease from the 1990's when it was at 5.8%. Experts say economic opportunities elsewhere - including Mexico - are a factor.

"As Mexico starts to stabilize and become a stronger economy more Mexican will find jobs," says Juan Ruiz, President of the Latin American Chamber of Commerce.

I’m not buying the premise.
I have seen no decline in my area.
We are still flooded with illegals.

Pew equals propaganda. But then again all our greatest achievements have been by Latinos so it could be a problem. /s

So jobs that could be done by Americans are being sent to third world countries in the name of stabilization. Classic take from the wealthy give to the poor. Exactly where does this benefit US?

We are still flooded with illegals.

Not where I live (NW Washington State). Most of our milkers (dairy country here) are Hispanic and we are low on workers. Out foreman is from Mexico (he's legal) and he said that many Mexicans are returning home. While the pay is good, we have trouble getting the local kids to take jobs as milkers. Most say that they "don't want to get dirty."

A growth rate of 2.8% is not a decline.

A decline in the rate of growth is not a decline.

A 2.8% increase in the Latino population means that there will be twice as many Latinos in about 25 years as there are today.

Is that good for Utah?

In my opinion an actual decline of -2.8% would be far better, leading to only 1/2 as many Latinos in Utah in 50 years.

I mean, seeing as the article is inviting us to think about things this way.

I don't like the cost of Latinos to the state in terms of welfare usage, crime, and I don't like the many aspects of the culture, including Latino gangs. I prefer that everyone in Utah speak English all the time.

As long as we are being asked to opine on the topic.

No, No, No! It’s the Mexican machismo in ALL the men. These Latin Lovers just can’t handle 2+ wives! Starts with affording it.

Ay, por favor-no esta mierda otra vez-as usual with the liberals, the “research” is misleading-the “Latino community” they are talking about is only populated by illegals and legal resident aliens-a US citizen-especially a native born US citizen-can’t just pack up and move to Mexico, whether or not they are Latino-they will not be allowed to stay there for 12 months of the year, unless they are already working for a US company with a facility in Mexico-a couple of my cousins did that for a year, and I considered doing it myself, but found a contractor to work for here instead.

The article is ignoring those of us of Latino ancestry who were born here, and whose families have been here for more than one generation-we are most of the Latino community in the SW states-but we also tend to vote GOP-no wonder we weren’t mentioned-doesn’t fit with the liberal narrative...

I agree with pretty much all you said-but like everyone else in my family, I was taught Spanish at home from early childhood as my 2nd language-Norteno dialect, since we are from SW Texas and do business with people from both sides of the border-my co-workers and I do business on occasion with tourists from Mexico-most do not speak English well...

If you have learned a 2nd language, you will not remain proficient/fluent if you don’t speak/read it fairly often-just my dos centavos ...

Same here man. The entrance to Home Depot is still flooded with them.

I bought a tool box from HD and had to use them to fight my way out to the parking lot.

Report I saw from Pew stated at least 59 Million in the U.S. now. Seems to me like most of them are living and doing well in Texas.

he said that many Mexicans are returning home.

They must be stopping in California on their way, and staying here. Around here, you can't swing a cat without hitting an illegal.

"We are still flooded with illegals"

The report doesn't have to do with illegals.

Follow the link above to the article and at the bottom there is a link to the lengthy report, which was published the 8th.

The righthand column of the report has links to other and previous reports including the 2010 report on illegals. For several years Pew was publishing yearly updates to that 2010 report but I don't know if they are still doing it.

In the 2010 report they measured illegals in 3 ways:

As a percent of population
As a percent of the workforce
As a percent of children in the public school system

Nevada was #1. California #2. Texas #3.

MrT5’s family are Frogs from Quebec-most of them still live there-he learned Quebecois as a child as his 2nd language, even though his parents were in Wa, near the Canadian border-not any different from my Latino family teaching me Spanish-traditionally speaking, it is-considered a sign of being well educated to speak a 2nd language with proficiency.
