Tuesday night was a big night for 24-year-old minor league third baseman JaCoby Jones. Well, I should call him a former minor league third baseman. Because on Tuesday night he made his major league debut with the Detroit Tigers, and he had a great game.

He did what every minor leaguer hopes to do in their first big league game: he got his very first MLB hit. And that’s not all — he got his first RBI as well. Not just one, but two!

It was the bottom of the sixth inning, and the Tigers were tied 3-3 with the Chicago White Sox. Jones came to the plate with runners on first and second, ready to face White Sox pitcher Matt Albers. Jones took a ball, then tried to bunt (which ended up foul), and took a called strike.

I remember Cal Ripkin Jr. hit a homer on his first at bat.

After Ausmus saw his bunting effort he told Jones to swing away.

Sorry to be “that guy”, but Cal went 0-2 on August 12, 1981. He finally got his first hit (a single) on August 16 in his 4th overall AB after being sporadically used as a pinch runner over his first week.

Joey Gallo homers, flirts with cycle in major league debut

He's got nothing on the Rangers.

I am sorry to hear that too. Messes up one of my greatest memories.

I actually saw him live on TV. I guess for some reason I thought they said it was his first at bat. Probably said it was his first home run.

I actually used to watch him as a kid when his Father was manager of the Asheville Orioles. This was around 1973 or so. His Sister would go around the bases in the 7th inning and sweep the bases off.

That has most certainly been a great baseball family... and still is!

I actually remember when Cal. Ripkin Sr. played in the Class D. Alabama/Florida League. He played for Pensacola. I still have an official Alabama/Florida League baseball autographed by the entire Panama City Fliers.

It was surprisingly good baseball.
