“Moe, Larry and Shemp, backstage at the Melody Top Theater in Hillside, IL.....very early ‘60’s. Very kind and subdued....I guess the “kid” in me expected them to be as “on” as I had always seen them on television.”

Oh, someone who remembers the Melody Top Theater in Hillside, IL! When I was a young teenager, my parents would take me with them to the mostly musical shows there, where I developed my deep love for musicals. I saw John Raitt perform there, as well as Howard Keel and others. Saw Brigadoon, Oklahoma, Carousel, etc., and I loved going to the Melody Top. Such wonderful memories.

Also was right next to Michael Caine (very tall) who came into a “head” shop during the hippie days, in Piper’s Alley, a famous tunnel of shops off the main drag of Wells Street, in Old Town, Chicago,IL. At the end of Piper’s Alley was the original “Second City” comedy theater, which spawned so many famous stars, many of whom ended up starring or appearing on TV’s Saturday Night Live show.

Also saw Pope John Paul II, when he came to Chicago and first did a motorcade and then gave an open Mass in Grant Park that I also went to. I was pretty far back in the huge crowd of people attending the Mass, however had the presence of mind to bring along some Bushnell binoculars of good strength.

There was a group of nuns standing nearby where I was located, straining to see the Pope who was on the distant stage that had been set up for the Mass. I took pity on them, and brought over to their group the binoculars I had so they could get a better look at the Pope. They passed the binoculars around amongst themselves, and were thrilled. My good deed for the day, lol.

My dad made friends easily. I almost forgot another celebrity who was friends with my mom’s family. Rod Serling’s family lived next door to my grandparents; my mom grew up with Rod. My grandmother used to babysit Rod Serling and his parents would babysit my mom. I only met him twice though.

All of the people i've seen mentioned so far reminds me when America was a better place. More idealistic and less cynical. I wish we could open a door back to that time.

Anyway, I have to congratulate you on your various proximities to greatness. You met some incredible people.

But at least I met Moses. :)

He was a fantastic race car driver/constructor, and is a unique and innovative industrial designer. Basically, he is a mechanical genius.

And, he was the only driver that Jim Clark ever feared n the track.

I never met Judd but at least he retired and wasn’t a senator for life. His father the former governor Hugh Gregg would attend the Nashua Republican City Committee meetings in the 90’s and he seemed decent enough.

Carol Burne--after a performance in Dallas

Wayne Newton--my neighbor dated his manager

George H W Bush --in a Houston jewelry store--we were only 2 shoppers

George W Bush--multiple times

John Glenn--friend's house & again, picked him & family up @ airport, Houston

Neil Armstrong--same friend's house, Houston. He was a new astronaut, about 1964...when he left we were told we had just met the first man to step on the moon.

I was in the same room with Ronald Reagan along with 1500 other people once. Also, shook hands with Spiro Agnew after a dinner (old Shamrock Hotel{ right before he had to resign.

The people I KNOW and who KNOW me...nobody's ever heard of! ...and I like it like that! LOL!

Nils Lofgren and Penn & Teller are very fond of their fans and hang out after shows to chat with people. Anybody that goes to their shows and doesn’t meet them should be more patient. Working on a SF convention I’ve hung out with David Brin, Tim Zahn, Jim Butcher and quite a few others. Will soon be hanging out with Elizabeth Gracen and George RR Martin. Met Ozzy on a book tour, but every metal fan in Tucson was there so he didn’t really have a lot of time.

I didn’t know Dan Gurney was a mechanical genius. It’s in his genes. His grandfather invented, patented and manufactured a ball bearing. He became quite wealthy.

I’m late to the party. BUT... In 1974 I was stationed at Andrews AFB and a bunch of us decided to go to bar somewhere on Chesapeake Bay. We went, got rowdy, screamed and yelled because the Band was great. They were the Delaware Destroyers. The Sherrif came in and looked at us sternly , then looked at the bartender who shook his head ‘No.’ The Sherrif looked at us again and we knew we were marked for getting pulled over. The lead singer came over and talked to us, got us a room at a sleazy motel in the area, gave us free drinks for the next hour, and had a roadie drive us to the motel. George Thoroughgood was one of the nicest celebrities you could meet.

I remember the Melody Top summer theater in Hillside, Illinois very well. I can vividly recall one musical I saw there, "Damn Yankees"...with Van Johnson.

Van is mostly remembered for many comedy, romance and WW2 war movies, but he had started out his career as a young song-and-dance man...and excellent one, by the way. Great dancer, good singer.....and he had appealingly blond good looks.

The thing I remember about Judd is that he wore a suit coat without matching trousers. Not a sport coat..but a coat that was supposed to be with a matching set of trousers.

And he wore unpolished shoes.

I know that a lot pols dress down so their constituents would not think of them as extravagant. But I saw this enough times that I got the impression of the absent minded professor.
