Windows 10 cumulative update KB 3176934 breaks PowerShell

Microsoft's update for version 1607 doesn't fix two widespread problems with Windows 10 Anniversary Update, and it breaks PowerShell DSC operations

Yesterday afternoon, Microsoft released KB 3176934 for those PCs running Windows 10 Anniversary Update. It's the fifth cumulative update for version 1607 (three were released before the product rolled out on Aug. 2) and brings the build number up to 14393.82. You can see the long list of official changes -- primarily bug fixes -- on the Windows 10 update history page.

Anniversary Update customers also received an update to the "servicing stack" -- the subsystem within Windows 10 that handles updates -- in KB 3176936.

All my critical software (complicated simulators) runs on SEVEN. Have no interest in Microsoft’s other train wrecks. IMHO, SEVEN remains their best product.

I am still with Win7, but even with it, I quit updating ages ago. Not long after I quit updating, one Win7 update killed some Dell laptops.

I am suspicious of any updates, even for other software. They tend to cause more problems than they resolve.

I finally bit the bullet — have a Linux laptop on order.

Win10 seems to be a load of crap. I use Win7 on my laptop and desktop.

But, I decided to try Linux for real.

They put out a Windows 7 “security” update in February that caused Corel Video Studio to not load. It actually had something to do with Win 10. I removed the update and shutdown all MS updates.
Win 7 is supposed to be supported into 2020, but I think MS is going to stop support long before that.

I do think MS is messing with the Win7 Microsoft Security Essentials updates.

Sometimes the current definitions load fine and at other times, they stall out. That only started about 6 months ago.

Now, I find the best way is to manually download the virus definitions file and physically run it.

I tried Win10 on an extra desktop hard drive and hated it. I have no intention of switching to it.

Good luck, MS. Had updates turned off for over two years now. Even that software that supposedly removes 10 nag notices told me it would not work unless I installed a newer "update" version.

Never had a single notice about 10, but I was curious. The fact that this computer is not even up to date enough to get 10 nag notices leads me to believe no new updates will be coming through.

What a surprise, I refused any "updates" to any damn thing!

Currently, I’ve got Windows Updates entirely disabled on all of my clients’ PCs. A couple of times a year, I un-disable it and see what shows up and maybe allow a few to install. After October 2016, they’ll all be permanently disabled .

Nothing actually really protects windows anyway other than requiring users to use limited user accounts and using software restriction policies to limit those users to executables that reside only in C:\Windows and the Program Files directories.

Linux Mint
I have a dozen friends using Linux Mint KDE 64 Bit. They are very happy with it. The updates are easy and the system is solid. And it is FREE! All were ex-Windows users and it was easy for them to convert over to Linux.

It was easy for them because I installed the OS for them. It is an easy install and much easier than any Windows install I have done. Only a personal password is required and NO authentication is required.

The beauty of Linux Mint is that I can instal the complete OS with all the important applications on one hard drive and then duplicate that hard drive for other computers. All of the necessary drivers and built in. Linux Mint finds the wireless hardware almost automatically and is a snap to setup. (Try that with Windows and the included wireless setup CD)

Also going from Linux Mint KDE 17 to 17.3 is as easy as one click of the Update Manager. The Update Manager automatically checks for updates and does NOT bug you with Pop Ups. The manager icon merely puts a blue dot in its icon's center when an update is avaliable.

I am sure happy I cut the ties with Microsoft a year and a half ago.

Here is a link if you are interested in trying it. The Download is free and no fees for using it. Linux Mint 17.3 "Rosa" KDE version.
Once you download the .iso file, burn it to a DVD and boot from the DVD to install it. It gives instructions as you install it.

PS I have installed Linux Mint on about 10 different laptops including 4 Dell 620 Latitudes and it works great.

Good Hunting... from Varmint Al

LOL
Why did anyone think this version would be any different from those before?

Doesn’t affect me as I’m still on 7
If and when I’m forced to ‘upgrade’ it won’t be to 10.
