It's been nearly half a century since the term "agony of defeat" joined the lexicon of American sports.
To this day, the phrase remains a broadcasting staple, whether it's coverage of the Olympics or any number of sports. A Google search for "agony of defeat" returns nearly 500,000 results.
With that in mind, we revisit the viral video that made an indelible mark on the sports world long before the era of social media -- the frightful ski jumping crash from the opening montage of "ABC's Wide World of Sports."

I always thought that crash scene was brutal.
Not just physically but mentally and emotionally as well.
To get to the big show and lose like that would totally destroy many people.
Glad the guy went on to have a successful career.
I miss the old Wide World of Sports.

The Optics of the Jump and Jimmy Carter and him opening his stupid yap again are a gift and I am still laughing so hard that tears cannot be suppressed (an I’m an ol tough guy that doesn’t cry)
I was telling my kids about a guy I went to school with - a gymnast. He had all sorts of trophies and went on to the Olympics. I googled him - he was on one of those “Agony of Defeat” things - slipping and funning full force into the vaulting horse.
He was really thrown for a loop - but was okay.
There was a video of him from five years ago - at the age of 50 or so. It showed him doing the vault and a flip in front of a school audience. He’s the coach for some school. It sounded like he takes his “fame” with humor.

Because there are about 3 left in public life, none in this country (other than Trump). The artist part did have me worried a bit, but it looks like he’s an exception there, being married to woman.
