Motherboard ^ | August 20, 2016 | Sarah Emerson

Capybara are real damn cute. Look at this bugger. In fact, capybara are so endearing, that some people may have been importing them to own as pets. This might explain why the 100-pound rodents, which are native to South America’s marshlands, have been showing up in places where they don’t belong. According to biologist Elizabeth Congdon, an assistant professor at Bethune-Cookman University, the state of Florida could have a serious capybara problem—and it might be the fault of exotic pet owners.

We used to have LOTS of Nutria around NE Florida years back. They were a real nuisance on golf courses. Out in the boonies they were fun to shoot. Maybe these things will be too. Haven’t seen any yet.

I recall a few being released in the 90’s in N. Florida. They were shot by some local hunters who didn’t really know what they were.

I should certainly hope so! It’s a good way to make Florida even crazier.

Caybara verses 20 gauge....winner by unanimous decision 20 gauge.

Have not seen any of these things up in NE Florida, yet. My yard problems are possum and armadillo.

It’s not hard to tell what they are... Nutria are also huge rats and stupid enough to wander around in the daylight making were easy picking if the cover wasn’t too think. Capybara may be more nocturnal foragers. Not sure about that though. I saw a NatGeo Wild show a while back where the Louisiana National Guard was using Guard “sniper” teams, driving around the bayous at night, shooting Capybara as part of the control strategy. Looked like fun and a good use of tax dollars.

***LOTS of Nutria around NE Florida***

I still remember when TV shows were encouraging people to raise Nutria for their furs. It turned out to be a pyramid scheme and soon collapsed. Suddenly all the local water holes became infested with Nutria, let lose by former raisers, much like thousands of Emus were let lose when that failed.

It is a delicacy in Venezuela, probably more of a necessity down there right now. Takes like pork from what I've read.
