I just finished reading the intense book Slave written by a female slave from Sudan. They do not just cut off the clitoris and labia, they also sew up the entrance to the vagina very tight. Thus many women and babies die in childbirth because of it.
It is insane to stop promiscuity by going after WOMEN. Lesbians are the least promiscuous pairing in the world. Men are the most promiscuous so it makes sense that gay men are the most promiscuous type of pair.
I think if we chopped penises into ribbons as well, we’d see a great decrease in human promiscuity, but isn’t that like killing toddlers to stop thumb sucking?

It is a tribal practice, you’re right. But I would also presume it was originally more of a nomadic or Marsh Arab or perhaps more broadly a semite or semitic ‘cultural’ practice. After Islam was introduced, at first in today’s KSA and Jordan, and then spread to other Islamic lands the practice became codified in Islam/Sharia.
Male circumcision is done for hygiene reasons, typically at a very young age. FGM has totally different reasoning behind it and is very sick.
However, neither male circumcision nor FGM were part of pre-Islamic, Zoroastrian culture in Iran, for example. So, it didn’t apply to the entire middle east. To date, Zoroastrians in Iran and elsewhere do not practice it, and there is nothing in Zoroastrian religion and scripture to make it obligatory or even desirable.
PS - reason I say it was most likely a nomadic or Marsh Arab practice is because in present-day Iran mainly those from Southern parts and bordering Iraq province of Khuzestan practice it - not all, it is family-specific. And, most residents in Southern Iran and Khuzestan are of Arab ethnic origin; similar to southern Iraq.

Because most religions do not have an equal view of female and male. Not that I in any way endorse Chaplin’s view, but that’s the real reason behind it.
Short of that, wives are expected to shave their lady parts as a courtesy to their husbands. The Reliance of the Traveler is a fascinating and horrifying study.
