Ryan Lochte 'robbery' was actually what happened when he and fellow swimmers DESTROYED a gas [tr]

Brazilian police say Ryan Lochte and three other swimmers who claimed they were robbed had in fact destroyed a gas station toilet and refused to pay for the damage until a security guard waved a gun at them, DailyMail.com can disclose. A source with knowledge of the investigation said the four handed over money after the guard at the gas station insisted they pay. The version of events emerged as police in Rio prepared to quiz the taxi driver who picked up the four after they left a nightclub and resume questioning the three swimmers still in Brazil.

I am not so sure about the Brazilian explanation. Let’s see - did the gas station guard report the incident to the police, as the police implied that the athletes should have done? If not, that starts to sound a lot like a robbery. Or maybe they were smashing up the place (why?) and maybe that annoyed a Brazilian who then robbed them? Or maybe it is a set-up where damage is claimed and money demanded out of drunk patrons... I have seen that one before. IDK but it is too early to pillory these guys based upon what is known at this point.

Could be they are being blamed for an already destroyed toilet.

In Central America it is called “mordida” and it is EVERYONE, not just cops. I needed a phone, tomorrow. The phone company said six weeks. I had a friend who worked at the phone company sending drivers out. I gave her $20 and when I got to my apartment the next day there was a phone. From one end to the other, nothing moves without mordida.

“Is whatever they (presumably) did worth months/years in a prison in Brazil?”

“That question will be answered by a Brazilian court.”

That’s what I’m afraid of. Will a Brazilian court consider that their being American should result in stiffer penalties than if they were Brazilians accused of the same offense?

Will nationalism come into play?

Once it hit the media (for whatever reason it did) then now we have an honor issue, not just a making damages right issue. This looks like it went well beyond the gas station private management.

With shady and odd things going on there, that doesn’t seem impossible either.

Maybe but if the police version is true (unreported self-help by guard who demands payment for damage at gunpoint and then does not report the incident to police), it just shows what a zoo Brazil is. I bet $400 goes a long way towards fixing a gas station in Brazil.

Or will some high muckety muck hint about something that will make it easily go away, so long as it’s hushed up?

But they need another $400 to tip the building inspector to approve it! (Guessing, guessing)

And are there criminal charges for the Brazilian guard who demanded cash at the threat of shooting them to death (if that is what happened)? Is that legal? Do you need to get an estimate on the damage first or can the guard just guesstimate it and then kill the person if he does not come up with the dough?

Baksheesh - a tip to expedite public service. Sometimes it seems like it might be a good idea. But yeah, there’s a huge downside.
