Steinhauer created a sonic black hole using a quantum state of supercold fluid called a Bose-Einstein condensate. The fluid flows through a tube in which lasers constrain the flow at two different energy levels, creating a kind of waterfall. Atoms reach supersonic speeds when they spill over its edge. This serves as the model event horizon.
To measure Hawking radiation, he pinged the fluid with a short laser pulse. This created a sound particle known as a phonon, along with a partner particle, near the horizon just as Hawking suggested happens near a real black hole. He then took pictures measuring the refractive index in the fluid a method used to image waves to track the sound particle and its partner particle as they moved toward the event horizon. He repeated the experiment 4600 times over six days.
When he looked through the images, he noticed a dark band emanating in both directions from the event horizon, which he says is evidence that two distinct particles were propagating at the exact same time despite being separated by the horizon. This

Quit fooling with this stuff!
BECAUSE WHAT COULD POSSIBLY GO WRONG.
I had an otherwise intelligent friend who was convinced sound was on the electro-magnetic spectrum. He doubtless will feel even moreso on reading this.
"Phonons"??
You probably need to get to Level 11 for those.
“although not everyone is convinced this fake black hole is the real deal.”
Sound black hole.
Not a black hole (swallows light)

Can anyone imagine a climate scientist doing this sort of precise scientific work? This guy even tests theories to see if they are correct.
Beam me up Scotty....it is a comin’.....neat stuff.
I had a pair of Bose-Einstein headphones.
Soooo if they tried this on hillary would it silence her or make her twice as annoying?
Jeeze, they’re smart enough to come up with this but they probably believe the phony made up nonsense called man caused climate change.
Mine goes to 12.
Did they make you smarter when you had your phonon?
My understanding, which could be wrong, is that this isn’t a real black hole and the tested particles aren’t real particles.
What doesn’t make sense?
Nice experiment; but I can see very little reason, if any, to let sound represent light — since it doesn’t and can’t.
Classic case of athletics and orioles.
Of course it isn't an electromagnetic black hole but the analogue experiments can be very powerful.
tested particles arent real particles
The sound particles are real particles just as much as manifestations of electromagnetic waves as particles are real.
Problem is ...it only works in two dimensions....here it is spitting out an authentic Obama Birth Certificate from the output slot:
