Picard was played by the finest actor of the bunch; Janeway’s chaneling of Kate Hepburn I rather did find appealing; but the BEST captain was (of course) Kirk.

The interaction between the original cast was unmatched by the later series.

One can never have enough Star Trek. The new Star Trek movie “reboots” have done a remarkably good job with the franchise, as have the actors who have done a really good job “chanelling” the original characters (Kirk and Dr McCoy in particular - I don’t think the new Spock does as well)...

Bingo! I never thought of that, but you’re right. Voyager was a good series. Interesting characters. Also liked the holographic Doctor as well as Seven of Nine.

Picard was played by the finest actor of the bunch;

If by that you mean the finest classically trained actor of the bunch, no argument there. One cannot dispute Patick Stewart's chops as an actor. That said, an actor of his training and ability should have been able to portray the role in a manner which left no dispute as to who, and even more importantly what the character was really all about. I've often been toubled by being unable to 'define' Jean-Luc Picard as well as I could define Bejamin Cisko, Kathryn Janeway, or even James T. Kirk.

Something was lacking there, but I can't really put my finger on what.

Janeway’s chaneling of Kate Hepburn I rather did find appealing;

I can wholeheartedly agree with this assessment. She did fine, but what I would have loved to really see was her channelling Kate Mulgrew, more than Kate Hepburn, although I'll take Hepburn in a pinch...

but the BEST captain was (of course) Kirk.

I think we'll have to agree to disagree, there. William Shatner had an easier task than the others, as he basically set the archetype, and the others who followed had to do a unique 'interpretation' of that archetype to be successful.

In my mind, the actor who *best* accomplished this goal was Avery Brooks, with Captain Cisko. (I'm not including Scott Bakula in this, simply because I haven't seen the series he played Captain Archer in, and thus can offer no valid opinion...)

I see all sorts of things wrong with the reboots, but I still found them entertaining.

What I find annoying with movies supposedly set in the future is the need to keep using demonstrably obsolete technology. In the Last movie, for example, (Star Trek Beyond) it shows the ship being overwhelmed by "swarm bots", but current technology would make short work of such an attack, so how much more so would it be able to do so in the future?

If we had a laser powerful enough to fry each bot individually, we could target and fry such a swarm before it could move close enough to pose any threat.

But then, there goes your plot. Such a plot simply wouldn't work with a future grounded in reality.
