Gabby Douglas is criticized for not putting her hand on her heart during U.S. national anthem -
Daily Mail (U.K.) ^ | 8/10/2016 | Sarah Dean For Mailonline

Gabby Douglas may have just helped her team win gold at the Olympics but that hasn't stopped some fans criticizing her for not putting her hand on her heart during the U.S. national anthem.

The American gymnast was the only member of her squad who was photographed with her hands by her sides as The Star-Spangled Banner played in Rio on Tuesday.

The Olympic veteran took gold alongside Madison Kocian, Laurie Hernandez, Simone Biles and Aly Raisman in the Women's Team All-Around gymnastics ompetition.

Twitter user Angela complained: 'There is no excuse as to why you could not salute the flag of the country that gave you the opportunity to compete.'

'Gabby Douglas just standing there and not placing her hand over her heart while our anthem played was UN-Olympic,' Dawn Wisdom wrote.

'As a military kid Gabby Douglas knows the proper way to respect the anthem,' another social media user said.

And Brittany Hargrave added: 'On the one hand, so proud of the Final Five gold win. On the other, so disappointed Gabby Douglas didn't salute the flag.'

Douglas explained why she didn't raise her hand to her heart during the national anthem after spotting the complaints on social media.

'First I want to say thank you everyone for all your support! It's a huge honor for me to be able to represent Team USA,' she said.

'In response to a few tweets I saw tonight, I always stand at attention out of respect for our country whenever the national anthem is played.

'I never meant any disrespect and apologize if I offended anyone. I'm so overwhelmed at what our team accomplished today and overjoyed that we were able to bring home another gold for our country.'

SHe definitely has the black power fist, and I agree she lacked the courage to raise it. It would have been the story of the Olympics if she did.

Many of these racist blacks claim the USA is not their country. They are ignorant of history and easily brainwashed.

“Standing at attention? Looks like she’s holding back that Black Power fist.”

It sure does look like it to me.

I was surprised and annoyed that Gabby couldn't be bothered to put her hand over her heart while our National Anthem was being played yesterday.

Just judging Gabby's body language (when not performing) and facial expressions during the competitions so far, she is a far different Gabby Douglas than four years ago. She seems to have a giant chip on her shoulder. She comes across as bitter and envious.

"Did she put her hand over her heart in 2012? I suspect she did... "

You're right. She did.

Did she talk, move around, adjust her cup, spit? Maybe she didn’t even realize what she wasn’t thing.

When I win the gold medal, I will show her how it’s done.

Here’s the entire ceremony: http://www.nbcolympics.com/video/medal-ceremony-final-five-gymnasts-receive-team-gold

She is holding the Rio trinket in both hands the whole time. The other girls held that with one hand.

If in her mind it is a descendant of slaves, she had better be glad her ancestors paid the price because she would never have had this opportunity as an African in Africa.

Thank you for your kind and thoughtful reply! For me, I would heart-salute during the national anthem, but that is preference rather than protocol. Protocol is citizens citing allegiance to the Flag, not requiring verbal participation by the retiree or veteran saluting during the ceremony, I would say, because the veteran has shown his allegiance when sworn in for a military occupation, a fact understood by all.

However, if one is facing the trooping of the colors by the color guard, in a formation or during a parade, a male in civilian dress ought to doff his cover and acknowledge the passing of the colors by a heart salute with it (again, I would say, and not be able to prove outright).

Correct me if this is wrong according to the book of etiquette or protocol. Thanks again.

Thank you.

The rules were changed for active duty out of uniform and vets to allow the hand salute.

Prior to the change, when out of uniform, and now that I am retired, I would find myself rendering honors with a hand salute before I realized it.

I found myself naturally gravitating to the hand salute because it was the most natural and reflexive action that my body was programmed to do when rendering honors. It was what I was programmed to do and anything else just didn’t feel natural. The hand-salute “fits.”

At any rate, we have the choice, hand over heart or hand salute, it is up to the person to decide.

Either way, whats in the heart counts.

Cheers.
