Gingrich blasts Trump's 'very self-destructive' behavior
Politico ^ | August 3, 2016 | Nick Gass

Posted on 08/03/2016 7:50:54 AM PDT by Pinkbell

Donald Trump's behavior over the last week has been "very self-destructive" to his campaign, former House Speaker Newt Gingrich said Wednesday, comparing the Republican nominee to a Hall of Fame quarterback who is in the midst of an interception-throwing slump.

"Trump is still behaving like as though it was the primaries and there were 17 candidates. He has not made the transition to being the potential president of the United States, which is a much tougher league," Gingrich said in an interview with Fox Business' "Mornings with Maria." "People are going to watch you every single day. They’re going to take everything they can out of context, and he is not yet performing at the level that you need to."

Gingrich remarked that Trump's performance recalled quarterback Joe Montana's "stretch during his career where he kept throwing interceptions; and for about half a season, it looked like he wasn’t Joe Montana anymore."

"And then he figured out what he was doing, and he changed. Trump, Trump is in that kind of a slump," said Gingrich, a Trump supporter who was under final consideration for the vice presidential slot before Indiana Gov. Mike Pence was chosen.

"It’s like watching a team go out on the field, throw an interception on the first play and go back off the field again," Gingrich continued, alluding to a host of recent comments and battles Trump has waged over the course of the last week, including sparring with the family of a fallen U.S. Army captain who spoke out against him at the Democratic convention, refusing to back prominent Republicans like Paul Ryan, John McCain and Kelly Ayotte in their elections, joking about tossing a baby out of his rally on Tuesday and generally responding to any personal attack against him."

A presidential campaign must be very stressful. Maybe Trump should take some time off to travel to some of the world's travel spots. That will boost his credibility on such issues during the debates and will also permit him to get some rest right now.

It can't be easy.

By confirming that he reads Ryan and his like far better than Gingrich does.

And he read Gingrich far better than Gingrich was betting on. Gingrich will never get over his butt-hurt for not getting chosen as Trump's VP.

Newt’s just mad because he didn’t get the VP nod.

He’s now outing himself as yet another member in good standing of the GOP-e.

Please explain how Trump is “proving his critics correct”. I read his statements & find them right one the money. What has he said that “proves his critics correct”? I look forward to you proving a specific example of this.

“I am a Trump supporter but he needs to stop and take a deep breath before opening mouth and inserting foot.”

I will ONLY vote for Trump - and I made up my mind about that last summer.

But you are correct.

The problem is that Trump is allowing the Dems to lead him off track. They KNOW that his very competitive personality doesn’t allow for low blows (like what Khan, Sr. did last week) to go unanswered - but that is EXACTLY what he needs to do. Instead, Trump needs to focus on Hillary’s unfitness for office, and the reasons why he is the only serious candidate for President who can successfully address our problems.

Please show us an specific example of Trump “putting his foot in mouth”. Something he said will do since everything he says is written down & examined for flaws. Thanks.

I think Trump’s base is rock solid, but he needs the Independents and thus he needs to adapt somewhat without surrendering who he is. A minor course change is in order.

It’s not easy, especially with the lying media pile on.

It’s a rough patch, we’ll get thru it.

But the problem is that if you let the attacks go unanswered then they become reality in people’s minds a al “Romney killed that man’s wife or Obama cares more about me or the Iraq War was about oil and revenge for Bush’s father, etc, etc.

If you don’t answer the attacks then they stick to the candidate.

For someone who is critical of the MSM you appear to accept their mis-characterizations of with ease. How many critical comment-parsing segments have you watched on Hilllary? Hillary’s remarks about her FBI investigation receive less critical reporting than Trump’s tweets.

In case you haven’t figured it out yet the MSM is attacking Trumps messaging by going after practically every statement he makes. Even pushing straw man attacks on him. Reason and accuracy be damned. They’re trying to shut him down using trivialities because his message is popular and on target whereas Hillary’s messaging sucks: more taxes, more cronyism and more control over the economy and people’s lives.

With Trump we are citizens. With Hillary and the Left we are subjects. They get to say what we are and treat us accordingly. You would be wise to see our own fate in their treatment of Trump.

I wouldn’t say it’s too late for him. How I would turn it around:

I still say he should apologize to the mother. There is no winning that battle, and his holdout will not net him any votes.

Second, he has to get ads on TV. It’s the only way to expose Hillary and get around the media coverage. There are plenty of people out there who only get their info from the news or what they hear on social media. That’s not good. This is a way to reach them.

Third, stay on message. I say his advisors and he need to come up with a framework of talking points for each rally. Put on there the latest media lies that need rebutting, the latest attacks on Hillary, and the policy. Make sure to hit those points. Don’t give them anything.

Fourth, at least until all this cools down, stay away from the media for a few weeks. Don’t give them anything they can possibly use. They are looking for a sentence fragment at this point.

He is just going to have to cautious of what he says because we can’t afford anymore Judge Curiel, Heidi retweet, Kahn family business. We are three months out, and another one of those “scandals” prior to the election will be a problem.

He might be right.

Though this is precisely why he didn't get the Veep slot.

Also, if anyone should be wise to the tactics of someone with "fear of success" and self sabotage, it's this guy.
