Shocking new pictures of the filthy waters in Rio have revealed yet more concerns for Olympic athletes in Brazil who have been told not to put their heads under water. Ganabara Bay will host the triathlon, sailing and some swimming events at the Games and last week a floating corpse and a severed arm were found floating in the water. A study has shown viral levels in the bay is up to 1.7 million times what would be considered worrisome in the United States or Europe.

Head up breaststroke puts a lot of strain on the neck and back and makes relaxed breathing impossible. It may do more harm than good. In the UK, a lot of women swim like this.
If you swim for exercise but don’t get your hair wet, here are 6 reasons why it’s not a good idea:
1. You can’t breathe well because your neck is constricted.
2. You’re risking neck and back problems. Imagine walking around for 20 minutes looking right up at the ceiling. This is the sort of position your head is in when swimming head up breaststroke.
Well, it’s probably cheap. But to the viewer at home it all sounds exotic.

How can you tell if you are in a third world country?
If they dump raw sewage into rivers/ocean its a third world country.
Sewage treatment is a luxury.
Award the Olympics to a third world country and you’re going to get a third world event.
It does indeed.
But for open water races they do a freestyle, during which their head stays in the water with the face rotating left and right for breaths.
