AFP photographer describes heartbreak of Nice attack aftermath
yahoo ^ | 15 June 2016 | Valery Hache

Here is his account of what he found:

"The dread began to fill me when I heard the sirens. Too loud. Then I saw the columns of fire trucks. Too many. Something wasn't right.

It was the evening of the July 14th, France's national day, and I had just spent several relaxing hours shooting the annual fireworks display. Four days earlier, when the month-long Euro football championship ended, all of us journalists breathed a collective sigh of relief.

Throughout the championship, including the final that I covered in Paris, we were all afraid that attackers would strike, so there was always tension.... Once I got to the area behind the truck, I saw bodies everywhere. I continued to take pictures, but couldn’t believe what I was seeing in my viewfinder. Bodies strewn all along Nice’s main street...

Some were tiny bodies. Kids. Their parents must have been so happy to give their kids a treat and bring them to see the fireworks on July 14th. And that’s the heartbreak of it all..."

I once attended a very nice school, not too much of interest to me. One class had discussions on some lost tribe afraid of a camera! Their fear was the photo stole a part of their soul! A class favorite, oh what fun!

Now; not fun, I think they were correct! No, not the blood and viscera, I've seen too much of that. The immense tragedy of the surviving loved ones at the scene. Yes, it is an art form, yes it is evocative of our own finite existence. How can it not take something from the victims?

Having had a 5 year relationship with a young lady living in Cannes, I spent a considerable amount of time on the Cote d’azur. And I can assure you there were many foreign nationals present on the Prom des Anglais for the national celebration. This was an attack on the world...just like 9/11.

"...I saw bodies everywhere. I continued to take pictures,..."

This right here is why I do not consider journalists as my human equals.

The most important thing was not rendering aid to the hundreds of injured, but to get that shot.

I wonder how many moaning, screaming, dying victims he walked past in his quest for a photograph.

I'm on the fence with this one. If Ike Eisenhower hadn't insisted on extensively and exhaustedly filming the horrors of the holocaust, it would be much easier to claim it never happened - just as the Armenian genocide is still denied today.

This makes it more difficult for the muzzy-huggers to pooh pooh and explain away 'slime terrorism.

Did Ike order the filming of the death camps while they were in operaton?

Did we allow the Nazis to continue gassing Jews so we could “get the shot”?

No?

Then it’s apples and oranges, FRiend.

Actually, Ike had camera crews with him all the way into Europe. I'm surprised you didn't know this. FRiend.

Did we allow the Nazis to continue gassing Jews so we could “get the shot”?

The journalist wasn't "allowing" the terrorist to kill anybody, FRiend.

You're objection merits no further discussion. You are dismissed.

I apologize for my terseness and any offense I have caused.

The crux is this: American troops did not allow suffering to continue just so they could film the death camps.

This photographer stepped over the bodies of dying people that he could have assisted. He could have rendered aid, and he did not.

Again, I apologize if I’ve offended you. Seems like I have in some way.

I apologize for getting snippy. The anger at these muzzloids is hitting on my last nerve today.

Having been a First Responder for many years, and having had the media around, I'd just as well prefer that the journos keep back and not touch any of the victims and injured. They are helping in their own way, as evidence and sometimes the images of co-conspirators are sometimes captured by their cameras that would otherwise be overlooked.

That photo of the dead child on the ground under the sheet, with the teddy bear laying beside her: My daughter has a teddy bear that looks a lot like that.

You know, you are awesome and horrible all at the same time.

When I was commenting on the photog I was absolutely thinking of the photo you just posted. I did not know about the suicide, but seem to remember his comment about how he had to wait a while for the child to die so the vulture would move in, so he could get the shot.

So no, you are not horrible. I am just in a horrible mood.

The photo of the dead child in Nice with the teddy bear next to her dead body seems to have affected me.

This right here is why I do not consider journalists as my human equals.

If he was the only one, or one of few, that was able to give aid at this time, I would agree. On the other hand, we need to document the full horror of the situation. Western Culture needs to SEE THIS in full to fully appreciate what we are up against.

If someone is bleeding out from their stump of a limb that just got torn off a moment before, there is no “on the other hand”, in my opinion.

We as civilized people are mandated to assist our fellow non-muslim humans.

It’s called direct pressure, and is the beginning and end of my first aid knowledge!

I also do not understand “photo journalists”.

I love photography but would *never* allow harm to come to man or beast, just to get a Pulitzer Prize shot.

How many photos were taken of the stranded dogs in NOLA, during Katrina?

How many put their damn camera down and went to get the dog?

That next great shot is always just around the corner...

When I read your comment, that is the photo that leapt to mind.

The story is even worse than you recall.

He patiently stalked the child as the vulture stalked her.

Hours were put in, waiting for her to collapse, offering him that “winning composition”.

Just when you think you’ve seen the coldest humanity has to offer...

At any time, during those interminable hours, he could have given her a drink of water, at least.

That meme is devastating, but does leave out some facts. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kevin_Carter, guy killed himself a little over a year after this was taken. Guy was depressed in general. Money issues, plus all the awful things he had seen. Then there is the backstory to the picture, so its not quite what it seems.

I know his story.
